BALTIMORE, MD - Undefeated and top-ranked Salisbury defeated host Johns Hopkins, 5-1, in non-conference field hockey action Wednesday night at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays, facing the number one team in the nation for the second time in 10 days, falls to 4-4 on the season. The Sea Gulls improve to 9-0.
Erica Henderson scored the first two goals of the game to stake Salisbury to a 2-0 lead less than 21 minutes into the game. Emily Voshell collected a long rebound off a save from Blue Jay goalie Elizabeth Peijnenburg and dumped a pass inside the circle to Henderson, who one-timed it into the cage at 11:12. Nine and a half minutes later, Henderson blasted a shot from the left end line that bent just inside the right post to make it a two-goal game.
That lead held for more than 30 minutes but then the Sea Gulls were able to get two goals just over two minutes apart to double their lead. Melissa Slocum set up the first one, as she inserted a corner for Salisbury. She sent the ball directly to Summer Washburn, who blasted a shot past Peijnenburg at 51:50. Just over two minutes later, Washburn put another hard shot on the cage off a corner, but junior Sarah Henderson cleared the ball off the line. Unfortunately, Samantha Johnson bounced on the rebound, and scored to put Salisbury up 4-0 at 54:13.
Washburn capped Salisbury's scoring at 63:23 with a goal nearly identical to her first. This time it was Johnson who inserted the corner, sending the ball up to Washburn for the goal. Sophomore Alexa Lantiere then ended the Sea Gulls' bid at their fourth shutout of the season when she banged home loose ball in the middle of the circle for her third goal of the season.
Peijnenburg finished with six saves while playing 61:07 in the cage. Freshman Zoey Atabek played the final 8:53 of the game. Freshman Kiana Duncan made a pair of defensive saves, in addition to Henderson's stop. Rachel Clewer also made six saves for the Sea Gulls in the win, while Amber Holland also added a defensive save.
Salisbury out shot Hopkins, 24-12, while the Blue Jays had more corners (18-10). Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 30 as Swarthmore visits Homewood Field. The Centennial Conference game is slated to start at 3:00 pm.
