BALTIMORE, MD - Katie Cecere scored a pair of goals to lead second-ranked Franklin & Marshall to a 3-0 win over host Johns Hopkins Wednesday night in Centennial Conference field hockey action at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays drop their first conference game of the season and fall to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the CC. The Diplomats remain unbeaten at 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
Cecere scored what proved to be the game-winner at 13:01 of the contest, giving the Diplomats the early 1-0 lead. She stole the ball at the top of the circle, dribbled in towards the goal and fired a shot past sophomore goalie Zoey Atabek. Just over six minutes later, Cecere collected a loss ball in the circle, dribbled wide right and fired home her second goal at 18:50.
Maria Guarisco added a goal with just 1:30 to play in the game to stake the Diplomats to a 3-0 lead. Guarisco dribbled up the right side of the field, cut back towards the middle and then backhanded a shot from the top of the circle into the Blue Jay cage.
Atabek finished with 14 saves in the loss, while her counterpart Avery Koep made four saves in the win. Franklin & Marshall outshot Hopkins, 27-10, and had 13 corners to six for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 5 as the Blue Jays travel to Collegeville, PA to take on the Ursinus Bears. Game time for the Centennial Conference match-up is set for 12:00 pm.
