Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing The Weekend (10-25-13)

Oct. 25, 2013

Freshman Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August. An experienced writer, he will bolster the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implacations, will lead the column each week).

Women's Soccer
The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team will travel to Gettysburg on Saturday for a matchup of the two top teams in the Centennial Conference.
The match has major implications for both the Blue Jays (14-1-1, 7-0-1 in CC play) and the Bullets (12-1-3, 7-1-1), who have spent much of the season neck-and-neck in pursuit of the top seed in the conference tournament.
It also presents a classic clash of the unstoppable force and immovable object. JHU, behind the play of junior Hannah Kronick, who leads the CC with 15 goals and who recently became the Blue Jays' all-time leader in both goals and points, has averaged an eye-popping 3.75 goals per game this season. Conversely, Gettysburg has held opponents to 0.31 goals per game.
That's not to say that either team has only thrived on one side of the field. Both have shown prowess across the board, making this a match very much worth seeing. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.

Men's Soccer
After struggling a bit out of the gate, the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team has found its groove, going 5-0-1 in its last six games and putting itself in position to earn a berth in the Centennial Conference tournament.
The Blue Jays (7-6-2, 4-2-1 in CC play) will look to continue their surge when they head to Chestertown, MD, for a Saturday afternoon match against Washington College (7-7-1, 1-5-1).
A win for the Blue Jays coupled with a loss by either F&M or Ursinus on Saturday would clinch a spot in the upcoming CC Tournament for the Blue Jays, who are in the unique position of having the ability to finish as high as second in the final standings, but as low as sixth with just two games remaining.
The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Football
The Johns Hopkins football team will look to keep rolling when it travels to Gettysburg on Saturday for its last game of the regular season outside of Maryland. The Blue Jays (6-0, 5-0 in Centennial Conference play) have been hot in recent weeks, beating their last four opponents by a combined margin of 204-44. Their play has resulted in them being ranked 12th and 13th, respectively, in this week's AFCA Division III Coaches Poll and D3football.com Poll.
But, as anyone who was on the field for JHU last year knows, Gettysburg (3-3, 2-3 in CC play) is not a team to be underestimated. Last fall, the Bullets gave the then 10th-ranked Blue Jays quite a fight at Homewood Field, leading 35-28 at one point in the fourth quarter before eventually falling 49-35.
Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. ET at Musselman Stadium.

Field Hockey
The Johns Hopkins field hockey team is currently in a battle for the last two spots in the upcoming Centennial Conference tournament.
A win against Gettysburg (8-6, 3-5 in CC play) on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field would put the Blue Jays (7-8, 5-4) in position to lock up a place in the tournament. Results of games involving Haverford and Muhlenberg will weight heavily on where the Blue Jays finish in the final standings. In essence, there are three teams fighting for two spots!
The game is set to start at 1:00 PM ET at Homewood Field.

Women's Volleyball
The Johns Hopkins women's volleyball team will travel to Juniata for the Wid Guisler Invitational tournament, which will pit the Blue Jays against the host Eagles on Friday and against Carnegie Mellon and DeSales on Saturday.
This weekend's tournament marks the final non-conference action of the season for the Blue Jays, who will close with crucial Centennial matches at Gettysburg and Dickinson next week. At 9-9 overall and 5-3 in the Centennial, JHU controls its own fate in the race for a CC Tournament spot.
