BALTIMORE, MD – Three former student-athletes from Johns Hopkins University were among the 42 individuals selected to receive a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship it was recently announced by the organization. The NCAA announced its male and female postgraduate scholarship recipients from fall sports for 2025-26. Each of the 42 individuals will receive at $10,000 postgraduate scholarship with 21 men and 21 women selected from fall sports. Recipients from winter sports will be announced later this spring with spring sport honorees announced early in the summer.

Johns Hopkins was one of just two schools in all divisions of the NCAA to have three student-athletes selected to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in this cycle. Trinity (TX) joined Johns Hopkins with three honorees, while Stanford, MIT and Michigan State all produced two scholarship recipients.

The three Blue Jays who are adding their name to the list of Johns Hopkins student-athletes who have been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship include
Eleni Panagopoulos (volleyball),
Will Sangpachatanaruk (men's soccer) and
Tim Treinen (men's soccer). The trio boosts Johns Hopkins' total number of award recipients to 65 since
Robert Smith (men's basketball) became the school's first honoree in 1964-65. This is the 12
th time in the last 13 years that at least one Johns Hopkins student-athlete has been selected. Since the start of the 2019-20 academic year, the selection of Panagopoulos, Sangpachatanaruk and Treinen give Johns Hopkins a remarkable 19 recipients of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Panagopoulos graduated from Johns Hopkins in 2022 with a degree in Biology and a 3.88 cumulative grade point average. She is currently in her second year of medical school at Johns Hopkins and becomes the second Johns Hopkins volleyball player to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

As a member of the Blue Jay volleyball team, she earned Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-America and Second Team AVCA All-America honors as a senior in 2021. She helped guide Johns Hopkins to the 2019 NCAA Championship with a perfect 35-0 record; she was an Honorable Mention AVCA All-America during the Blue Jays' national championship season.Â

In all, Johns Hopkins posted an 88-9 record during her three seasons (2020 season canceled due to COVID pandemic) with three Centennial Conference titles, three trips to the NCAA Tournament and the 2019 national title. The Blue Jays won an NCAA Division III-record 66 consecutive matches from 2019-21.

Panagopoulos played in 94 matches and collected 678 kills, 147 blocks, 247 digs and 74 service aces during her career. At the conclusion of her career, she ranked fourth in school history in career hitting percentage (.312) and 19
th in total kills (678).

Sanpachatanaruk was a four-year member of the Blue Jay men's soccer team from 2021-24. He graduated with a degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and carried a 3.91 cumulative grade point average.  Sangpachatanaruk is currently enrolled in a PhD program in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware.

Sanpachatanaruk earned Second Team CSC Academic All-America honors and was a Second Team United Soccer Coaches All-Region and First Team All-Centennial Conference selection as a senior in 2024. He helped lead the Blue Jays to a 53-14-19 record with two Centennial Conference titles and four trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals during his sophomore season.

A starter in 33 of the 80 career games he appeared in as a forward for the Blue Jays, Sanpachatanaruk scored six goals and dished out 14 assists during his career with personal bests of four goals and eight assists as a senior.

Treinen was a five-year member of the men's soccer team from 2018-2022; he played as a graduate student in 2022 after the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. He graduated with a degree in Neuroscience and a 3.63 cumulative grade point average and will begin medical school at this fall.

A two-time First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Treinen was a Third Team United Soccer Coaches All-American and a First Team D3soccer.com All-American in 2022, when he was also named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Year.  A two-time First Team All-Centennial and two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection, he was also twice named the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Team as well (2021, 2022).

An anchor of the Blue Jay defense throughout his career, Treinen started all 77 games he played in and totaled one goal and two assists. He spearheaded a Johns Hopkins defense that led the nation in shutouts (16) and finished third in goals against average (.405) in his final season. In all, the Blue Jays posted 41 shutouts during his career; the 16 shutouts in 2022 are tied for the most ever by a Blue Jay men's soccer team.

Sanpachatanaruk and Treinen are the fourth and fifth men's soccer players in Johns Hopkins history to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

The NCAA provides the $10,000 scholarships to just 21 male and 21 female athletes each season (fall-winter-spring). For the fall, the sports included are cross country, football, soccer and water polo for men and cross country, equestrian, field hockey, rugby, soccer, triathlon and volleyball for women.

There is no limit on how long after completion of their undergraduate degree a student-athlete may be nominated.
