ANNAPOLIS, MD - The fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins water polo team defeated sixth-seeded George Washington, 9-7, in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Championship. The Blue Jays earn fifth place at the championship and automatically qualify for the CWPA Eastern Championship in two weeks.
George Washington (13-14) twice took one-goal leads in the opening five minutes of the period before Hopkins (19-9) reeled off seven straight goals in a run that bridged the first period intermission to take an 8-2 lead. Junior Wes Hopkins got the run going with the first of his two goals on the day with 2:47 remaining in the opening period. Thirty-three seconds later, sophomore Kevin Yeescored to give the Blue Jays a lead they would not relinquish.
The Colonials finally got back on the board at the 6:14-mark in the third quarter with a goal from Adam Wrobel. GW would score the next three goals to cut Hopkins' lead to 8-6 with 2:34 left in the third. Freshman Camden Schreederended the run with an extra-man goal with 54 seconds to go and Hopkins led 9-6 at the break. Nate Little would cut the deficit back to two at the 6:33-mark in the final quarter, but that's as close as the Colonials would get despite a pair of man-up situations in the final five minutes.
Hopkins and freshman Matt Fraser led the Blue Jays with two goals each, while senior Thomas de Lyon and sophomore Garrett Davidson each tallied two assists. Sophomore Erik Henriksonmade 11 saves and grabbed two steals to earn the win.
Hopkins advances to the 2013 CWPA Eastern Championship, November 22-24 in Providence, RI. It is the Blue Jays 10th appearance at the Eastern Championship and first since 2011.
