Hopkins Splits on Day Two of CWPA Southern Championship

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins water polo team split its matches on the second day of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Championship. Hopkins opened with a tough 11-9 loss to host and fifth-seeded Navy but rallied for a 14-11 win over eighth-seeded Gannon. The Blue Jays (18-9) will play the sixth-seeded George Washington Colonials in the fifth-place match on Sunday.

With the game tied at one, the Mids' Thomas Patterson converted a five-meter shot with 1:28 to go in the opening stanza and Navy led 2-1 at the break. The Mids picked up right where they left off in the second, scoring four straight to push their lead to 6-1. Sophomore Langdon Froomerscored with 36 ticks on the clock to end the Navy run and make it a 6-2 game at the half.

Hopkins came out strong to start the third, getting back-to-back goals from senior Stephen Kingery and Froomer to cut the deficit in half with 6:20 still to go. The teams then traded goals back-and-forth over the final six minutes and Navy took a 9-6 lead in the final quarter. Sean McDonald pushed the lead to four less than 90 seconds into the quarter. The Jays responded with a goal from freshman Camden Schreederbut Lucas MacLellan came right back for the Mids just 18 seconds later and it was an 11-7 game with 3:05 to go. Hopkins would pull within two with 45 seconds remaining with goals from Froomer and Hopkins, but that is as close as the Blue Jays could get.

Froomer led the Blue Jays with his third hat trick of the season while also tallying a team-high two assists for five points. Junior Wes Hopkins added a pair of goals while Beal had a goal and an assist. Kingery grabbed four steals and drew two ejections, and freshman Matt Fraserand de Lyon drew five ejections each. Sophomore Eric Henrikson made seen saves and had three steals in the goal.

Hopkins jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter with goals from Beal, Froomer and sophomore Kevin Yee. The Blue Jays kept at it the second quarter, getting the periods first two goals from senior Thomas de Lyonand Yee to push out to a 5-1 advantage. Gannon cut it into the lead with a goal from Nathan Bean. But Schreeder got that one back as the Blue Jays took a 6-2 lead into the half. The Golden Knights exploded for seven goals in the third quarter, while holding the Blue Jays off the board, to take a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Tommy Nimrod and Adam Wolf did most of the damage for Gannon, as the pair combined for five goals.

Hopkins responded in the fourth by outscoring Gannon, 8-2, in the stanza to take the 14-11 win. de Lyon scored three in the period, while Beal had a pair as the Blue Jays rallied. Beal tied the game with 4:15 to play and de Lyon the put Jays ahead for good at the 3:30-mark. De Lyon led Hopkins with five goals, while Beal added a hat trick.

Hopkins and George Washington will face off at 1:00 pm in Scott Natatorium.
