Brandeis Invitational 
WALTHAM, MA - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team beat Boston College at the annual Brandeis Invitational for its fourth straight win. Hopkins then dropped decisions to Air Force, MIT, Columbia, Brandeis and Brown (forfeit). The Blue Jays enter the winter break with a 5-6 record.
Hopkins opened the day with a 15-12 win over Boston College, with wins in the Foil and Epee. The Eagles took a close 5-4 decision in the Sabre, despite three wins from freshman Patrick Rose for the Jays. Sophomore John Petrie led Hopkins to a 5-4 win in the Foil, including the clinching win in the final bout, with three wins. His first win of the round was the 100th of his career. Hopkins then earned a 6-3 win in the Epee with two wins each from freshmen Nathaniel Green and Dylan Etzel and sophomore Mark Zimmermann.
JHU then fell 17-10 to Air Force, while earning a win in the Foil. The Falcons opened with an 8-1 win in the Sabre, followed by a 6-3 Blue Jay win in the Foil. Petrie led the Jays by winning all three of his bouts and sophomore Glenn Balbus also won a pair. Air Force closed out the win a 5-4 decision in the Epee, despite two wins from Zimmermann for JHU. In the next round, MIT used wins in the Sabre and Epee to take a close 14-13 win over Hopkins. The Engineers claimed the Sabre with seven wins while the Blue Jays swept the Foil. Balbus, Petrie and sophomore Jonathan Mui each won three bouts for the Jays in the Foil. MIT then won the Epee by a 7-2 score to close out the win.
Hopkins dropped a 23-4 decision to Columbia, including a tough 5-4 loss in the Epee. Etzel led the Jays with a pair of wins in the Epee in the loss. Hopkins then lost to host Brandeis, 18-9. The Blue Jays lost 8-1 in the Sabre, but nearly pulled out wins in the Foil and Epee, falling 5-4 in each. Balbus led Hopkins in the Foil with two wins, while Zimmerman had two in the Epee. JHU was then forced to forfeit its match versus Brown because of its scheduled flight back to Baltimore.
Hopkins returns to action on January 25 at the Philadelphia Invitational.
