BALTIMORE, MD - Five different players scored, and Johns Hopkins secured a 5-0 win in the first game of the JHU Invitational. Senior Christina Convey opened the contest with a goal 45 seconds in, and Hannah Kronick, Meg Van de Loo, Alyssa Morgan, and Allie Baker all added second half goals to put the game away.
The Hopkins defense had a strong showing, allowing only four shots with just one shot on target in the game. Senior Kelly Leddy got the start in goal, and freshmen Adrienne Johnson started her first career game for the Blue Jays as a center back. Junior Emily Nagourney and sophomore Hope Lundberg also saw extended time for the defense in the team's opening match.
Hopkins got the season off to a fast start, with Convey burying a shot past the Averett keeper on a beautiful through ball from fellow senior Kelly Baker. Not long after, junior Hannah Kronick appeared to have scored her first goal of the season after connecting on a shot inside the 18, but was called offsides. Despite dominating possession for the majority of the half, Hopkins only carried a 1-0 lead going into the locker room.
The Blue Jays were able to bust the game wide open in the second, getting back-to-back goals from Hannah Kronick (67') and freshman Meg Van de Loo (70'). Kronick was able to finish after the ball bounced over the Averett keeper's head, while Van de Loo netted her first career score collecting a ball off a corner kick.
Freshman Alyssa Morgan was also able to score in her first career game, while Junior Allie Baker chipped the goalie from 25 yards out in the 88th minute to cap the scoring for Hopkins. The Blue Jays will return to action tomorrow at 3pm to face Methodist in the final game of the JHU Invitational.
