PRINCETON, NJ - The Johns Hopkins water polo team split its matches on the first day of the Princeton Invitational to move to 5-1 on the season. Hopkins opened with a 9-3 win over Iona before falling 12-10 to 16th-ranked Santa Clara. Freshman Matt Fraser led the Blue Jays with five goals on the day, while senior Stephen Kingery and junior Johnny Bealeach handed out five assists.
In a rematch of the both teams' opener a week ago, Hopkins got the same outcome, though this time it wasn't as exciting. One week after rallying from a five-goal deficit to win 12-11, the Blue Jays never trailed in a 9-3 win over the Gaels. With the match tied at 1-1, Hopkins got goals from freshman Giovanni Cragnotti and junior Wes Hopkinsto lead 3-1 at the end of one. Matthew Steinicki cut the deficit to one to open the second quarter, but Hopkins answered with a five-goal run that bridged half time as the Jays pushed out to a 7-2 lead.
The score stood that way for more than 10 minutes before Kingery netted his first goal of the season midway through the fourth quarter. Freshman Bret Pinsker chipped in a goal to make it a seven-goal game. Patrick Dougherty had the final say of the game, scoring with just six seconds remaining to account for the 9-3 final. Beal led the Jays with three points, all on assists, while sophomore Kevin Yee swiped four steals against Iona. Sophomore Erik Henriksontotaled 11 saves in the win.
Hopkins suffered its first loss of the season in the evening, dropping a tough two-goal decision to the Broncos. Santa Clara led 3-2 after the first quarter and was up 7-3 late in the second before a pair of Hopkins goals made it a 7-5 game at the half. The scoring continued to seesaw back-and-forth and the Broncos held on for the win. Fraser led the Blue Jays with a career-high four goals, while also drawing three ejections. Kingery handed out five assists, one shy of his career high, and junior Danny Ovelarmade 10 saves in the loss.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 15 and will face Harvard at 11 am and Penn at 3:30 pm.
