Johns Hopkins Swims Past St. Mary's, 174-64

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's swim team won each of the first 11 events on the way to a 174-64 win at St. Mary's on Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays remain unbeaten as they improve to 5-0, while the Seahawks fall to 4-7 after the long-course (50-meter) meet. Freshman Scott Sterrett led Hopkins with a pair of individual wins, while eight other Blue Jays each won an individual event.

Hopkins opened the meet with first and second-place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay. Seniors Will Kimball and Anthony Lordi, junior Greg Kogut and senior David Woodford took the win with a time of 1:55.71. Taking second place in 1:56.00 were junior Ryan Cunningham, sophomore Justin Tang and freshmen Kyle Verdeyen and Jeremy Bauchwitz. The Blue Jays then took first through fourth in the next five events to put distance between themselves and the Seahawks. Freshman Andrew Greenhalgh kicked off the streak of big wins with the 200 Free, taking first in 1:59.15. Freshman Patrick Flynn placed second in 2:01.96, followed closely by classmate Josh Hughes just 0.12 seconds later. Sophomore Billy Gravley wrapped up the sweep with a fourth-place finish and a time of 2:05.82.

Junior Dylan Davis won the 50 Back, clocking in at 28.55 while senior Joe Acquaviva took second in 29.83. Woodford placed third in 30.15 and Kimball took fourth in 30.72. Sterrett followed with the first of his two wins, taking the top spot in the 50 Breast in a time of 33.50. Freshman Austin Bridges touched in 34.00 for second, followed by junior Aaron Katrikh (37.10) and freshman Connor Johnson (38.90). Tang then won 100 Fly as he touched in 1:00.99, while freshman Evan Holder took second in 1:02.20. Freshman Muhammad Hudhud placed third with a time of 1:02.71 and Verdeyen clocked in just 0.15 seconds later for fourth place.

Kogut picked up a win in the 50 Free, beating Acquaviva to the wall by seven-hundredths of a second to win with a time of 25.95. Katrikh placed third in 26.21 and Hughes took fourth with a time of 26.46. Bauchwitz followed with a win in the 100 Free, touching in 54.50. Cunningham took a close second with a time of 54.71, while Katrikh placed third in 56.82. Flynn then won the 100 Back by nearly two seconds, touching in 1:02.65. Lordi placed second with a time of 1:04.57 and Johnson placed fourth in 1:11.99.

The Blue Jays then swept the top three spots in the 100 Breast, followed by the top four in the 400 Free and 50 Fly before swimming exhibition in the final two events. Sterrett grabbed his second win, clocking in at 1:11.71 to win the 100 Breast. Freshman Evan Holder placed second in 1:12.14, followed by Hudhud in third with a time of 1:14.90. Gravley followed with the win in the 400 Free as he beat the field to the wall in 4:20.92. Tang took second in 4:23.76, beating classmate Michael McGoldrick by just four-hundredths of a second, and Davis followed in fourth with a time of 4:24.49. Lordi wrapped things up by taking the top spot in the 50 Fly with a time of 27.17 while Acquaviva touched in 27.69 for second. Woodford placed third with a time of 28.12 and Kimball took fourth place in 28.69.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 18 as the Blue Jays host the seventh-ranked Stevens Tech Ducks. The meet is scheduled to start at 11 am in the Newton White Athletic Center.
