Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing the Weekend (01-24-14)

Jan. 24, 2014

Freshman Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August. An experienced writer, he will bolster the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implacations, will lead the column each week).

Men's Basketball
The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team will take on Muhlenberg in the Wall-O'Mahony game, an annual contest held at Goldfarb Gym in honor of Glen Wall and Matt O'Mahony. The two were teammates on the Blue Jay basketball team from 1982-84 and lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Each year, an MVP from each team is selected after the game.
This year's edition of the game should be an exciting one as both teams are currently right in the thick of the Centennial Conference title hunt. The Blue Jays and the Mules each sport a conference record of 6-3 and are tied for fourth place in the CC. A win by JHU would put the team in position to challenge for a higher seed in the conference tournament.
The game is set to start at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Women's basketball
The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team will look to improve to 11-0 in Centennial Conference competition with a win against Muhlenberg on Saturday afternoon.
JHU (12-3 overall) won its first 10 CC games behind the offensive skill sets of sophomore Katie Clark (11.5 points per game) and senior Fatu Conteh (11.4 points per game) along with strong team defense. The Blue Jays will likely have to stick to this recipe if they are to knock off the Mules, who currently sit at 6-4 in CC play (9-7 overall) and field the conference's top scorer in Leanna Tallamy (17.9 points per game).
Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET at Goldfarb Gym.

Men's and Women's Track
The Johns Hopkins men's and women's track teams will make the trip to Pennsylvania this weekend to compete in the Haverford Invitational. The meet is expected to run throughout Saturday and will give the Blue Jays one of their first real tastes of Centennial Conference competition, as not only Haverford, but also Swarthmore, will be in attendance.

Wrestling
The Johns Hopkins wrestling team will travel to New York City this weekend to take on New York University and Washington & Lee in a tri-match. The meet, which will be held on Saturday, represents the Blue Jays' first foray into Centennial Conference action of the year. A pair of wins would give JHU momentum heading into the heart of its conference schedule.
The featured match of the day should come at 141 pounds in the JHU-NYU match. Johns Hopkins senior Henry Stauber is currently ranked 10th in the nation in that weight class, while NYU's Brandon Jones is ranked second.

Men's & Women's Fencing
The Johns Hopkins men's and women's fencing teams will compete in the University of Pennsylvania's annual Philadelphia Invitational this weekend. The Blue Jays will face some tough competition as Duke, Cornell (women), Temple (women), Sacred Heart, Northwestern and North Carolina as well as host Penn are all scheduled to compete.
Competition will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the men and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday for the women.
