Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing The Weekend (10-10-14)

Oct. 10, 2014 Sophomore Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August 2013. An experienced writer, he bolsters the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implications, will lead the column each week).

Field Hockey
The Johns Hopkins field hockey team will have the opportunity to prove itself against the top squad in the Centennial Conference when Ursinus visits Homewood Field on Saturday.
The Bears (10-1, 6-0 in CC competition) have allowed their opponents little room for error through the first half of the season. They field a lethal trio of scorers in Megan Keenan, Danielle Strong and Devin Brakel, all of whom rank among the top five in the conference in goals scored. They're also equally effective on the defensive side of the field, with goalie Danielle DeSprito allowing only 1.4 goals per game.
The Blue Jays (5-6, 2-2) will have to contain the Bears on defense and put their scorers in position to find the net if they are to emerge victorious. Game time is 1:00 p.m.

Volleyball
The Johns Hopkins women's volleyball team will travel to Collegeville, PA, this Saturday to square off against rival Ursinus.
The Blue Jays (11-10, 2-2 in Centennial Conference play) are riding high after sweeping Nuemann and pulling out a five-set match against Franklin & Marshall in recent days.
But they will have to be on their guard against the Bears (12-7, 1-4), who have frustrated opponents with their ball movement so far this season. Setter Gina Powers is averaging 8.15 assists per set and UC can hop back into the race for a CC playoff spot with a win vs. JHU.
The match is set to start at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Men's & Women's Soccer
The Johns Hopkins men's and women's soccer teams will participate in a double-header against Ursinus this weekend.
The men (7-3-1, 2-2 in Centennial Conference competition) will look to get back above .500 while the women (10-2, 4-0) will try to stay undefeated.
But the two teams will have to be at their very best to beat their Ursinus counterparts, both of which have proven to be formidable opponents thus far this season.
The women's game is scheduled for noon ET and the men's game will follow at 3 p.m. ET.

Men's Water Polo
The Johns Hopkins water polo team will be in the nation's capital on Saturday for a match against George Washington.
A strong performance could give the Blue Jays confidence heading into one of the biggest events of their season - the Collegiate Water Polo Division III championships. The tournament will take place next weekend in Philadelphia.
Against the Colonials, JHU will look to a strong offense - led by Johnny Beal and his team-high 27 goals - and a stingy defense to lead the way.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. ET.

Tennis
The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team will have the opportunity to prove their mettle against the reigning Division III national champions on Saturday.
Amherst College, which knocked off Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-3 to claim its title last spring, will be in town to face the Blue Jays.
The match is expected to start at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and will be played at Morgan State University while the new Johns Hopkins tennis facility is being completed.

Women's Lacrosse
Fans interested in getting an early look at the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team can watch the Blue Jays take on North Carolina at Homewood Field on Saturday afternoon. Match time is 3:00 p.m. ET.
