Oct. 11, 2014 WASHINGTON, DC - The Johns Hopkins water polo team held off a third-quarter rally from host George Washington en route to a 15-13 win Saturday night. The Blue Jays improve to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in CWPA Southern Division play, while the Colonials fall to 8-9 on the season and 0-5 in league play.
GW led, 2-1, early in the first half after back-to-back goals by Pierce Deamer, but Hopkins tallied seven in a row to end the first quarter with an 8-2 lead. Junior Langdon Froomer tied the game with the first of his three goals on the night, followed by two quick goals from classmate Garrett Davidson and sophomore Matt Fraser, just 18 seconds apart. Senior Johnny Beal followed with back-to-back goals in a 22-second span and Hopkins led 6-2. Davidson and Fraser repeated their feat with goals in quick succession and JHU held an 8-2 lead at the quarter break.
The Colonials, however, came storming back in the second period. Ridvan Pehlivan opened the quarter with a five-meter goal, which ignited the offense to four tallies in a span of 2:09. GW's defense, meanwhile, blanked the Blue Jays in the quarter as the Colonials pulled within two, 8-6, at halftime.
Pehlivan opened the third quarter with his third goal of the night to make it a one-goal game before Froomer ended Hopkins' drought at the 6:16-mark. Brian Mojica then scored on a power play to pull the Colonials back within one and Bogdan Petkovic knotted the game at 9-9 with 3:34 remaining in the period. The Blue Jays, however, tallied the final two goals of the quarter to take an 11-9 lead after three. Froomer put JHU up 10-9 with his third of the night and Fraser put the Jays up a pair with seven seconds remaining in the quarter.
For the third consecutive period, Pehlivan opened with a goal - his second penalty marker of the night and fourth score overall - and after a quick goal from Fraser, Petkovic completed his hat trick to make it 12-11 with 6:42 remaining. Senior Wes Hopkins responded with two in a row and sophomore Gio Cragnotti followed with one of his own as JHU regained a four-goal advantage, which proved too much for the Colonials to overcome. Mojica and Adam Wrobel tallied back-to-back to end the game, but it was not enough as Hopkins took the 15-13 win.
Fraser led the Blue Jays with a season-high four goals and drew five ejections. Froomer had a hat trick while Beal and Davidson finished with two goals and two helpers each. Junior Erik Henrikson finished with 11 saves while also swiping four steals and handing out an assist.
Hopkins returns to action next weekend at the CWPA Division III Championship hosted by Washington & Jefferson. The Blue Jays, winners of 15 CWPA DIII titles, earned the number one seed for the tournament.
