Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing the Weekend (10-17-14)

Oct. 17, 2014
Sophomore Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August 2013. An experienced writer, he bolsters the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implications, will lead the column each week).

Volleyball
The Johns Hopkins women's volleyball team will look to take another step towards a spot in the Centennial Conference tournament against Haverford on Saturday.
But coming away with a victory against the Fords will be no small task for the Blue Jays (12-10, 4-2 in CC competition). Haverford (16-7, 6-0) has reeled off six straight wins, four of which have been sweeps.
JHU will likely have to defend against a barrage of hits from Haverford's Meg O'Day, who leads the CC in kills per set (3.72) and in hitting percentage (.375). The Blue Jays will also have to find a way to get the ball past O'Day (24 solo blocks). Quick ball movement and first-time kills will be essential for the Blue Jays. The match will take place at Goldfarb Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m. and Hopkins will honor its seniors before the match

Field Hockey
The Johns Hopkins field hockey team will attempt to halt a two-game losing slide when Haverford comes to Homewood Field on Friday night.
The Blue Jays' (5-7, 2-3 in Centennial Conference play) slide came against the top two teams in the Centennial (F&M • Ursinus), but have left them with little margin for error in the race for a Centennial playoff berth. A win against Haverford (5-7, 1-4) is an almost must-win if the Jays hope to stay in contention for one of the five playoffs spots.
Match time is 7:00 p.m. ET.

Women's Soccer
The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team will seek to extend its current winning streak to 10 matches against Haverford on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Jays (11-2, 5-0 in Centennial Conference play) are rolling after overcoming a choppy start to the season. JHU has shutout seven of its last nine opponents while averaging 2.62 goals per match.
However, the Blue Jays will have to turn in a strong performance against Haverford (5-5-2, 1-4) if they are to maintain their momentum. The Fords have held opponents to an average of one goal per game and boast a dangerous scorer in Connie Friedman. The match will be played at Homewood Field and is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Football
After taking some time to rest during its annual bye week, the Johns Hopkins football team is redy to continue its pursuit of another Centennial Conference title.
The Blue Jays (5-0) will return to action against longtime rival Dickenson in Carlisle, PA, on Friday night.
JHU will have little margin for error against the Red Devils, who field arguably the most dangerous running back in the CC. Cedric Madden has sliced through defensive fronts so far this season and currently leads the conference in rushing yards with 596.
The Blue Jays will have to find a way to contain Madden while moving the chains themselves if they are to emerge victorious.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

Cross Country
The Johns Hopkins men's and women's cross country teams will have to employ the classic divide-and-conquer strategy this weekend.
The teams will send some of their athletes to Winneconne, WI, for the Oshkosh Invitational and some to Princeton, NJ, for the Princeton Invitational. Both meets will take place on Saturday.
The Oshkosh Invitational will give the Blue Jays the chance to run on the official course of the 2014 NCAA Midwest Regional Championship and the 2015 NCAA Championship. Among the teams that the Blue Jays expect to see in Wisconsin are MIT (ranked 14th for men and 4th for women), North Central (1st for men, 21st for women) and Grand Valley State.
The JHU women's team is currently ranked first in Division III while the men's team is ranked 13th.

Men's Water Polo
The Johns Hopkins men's water polo team will head to Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, PA, this weekend to compete in the 2014 Men's Division III Championship.
The top-seeded Blue Jays (7-6) will have their eyes on a fourth-straight Division III title after having previously claimed the crown in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
But first, JHU will have to face off against fifth-seeded Penn-State Behrend and fourth-seeded Connecticut College on Saturday. Wins against both schools would result in the Blue Jays advancing to the championship game on Sunday.

Men's Soccer
With only four games left in the regular season, the Johns Hopkins men's soccer is currently in position to claim one of the five spots in the Centennial Conference tournament.
The Blue Jays (8-3-2, 2-2-1 in Centennial Conference play) can tighten their grip on their spot and possibly climb even higher in the conference rankings with a win at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday night. That won's be easy - F&M is currently 12-0-1 overall and 5-0 in the CC.
Game time is 6:00 p.m. ET.
