Hopkins led wire to wire in this one but had to hold off a furious Navy rally to get the win. Hopkins scored the game's first two goals as the Blue Jays jumped to a 2-0 lead just 52 seconds in. the Mids answered with a pair of goals from Thomas Patterson and Robert Sutherland to tie the match with 5:09 to play in the opening quarter. The Blue Jays came right back with a 3-1 run as they took a 5-3 lead at the end of the quarter.
Patterson opened the second quarter scoring just 28 seconds in to pull Navy within one, but Hopkins responded with a four-goal run from four different players as JHU took a 9-4 lead. Navy ended the run with a pair of quick goals that cut the deficit from five to three, but a Matt Fraser goal with 2:50 to play made it a 10-6 game. The Mids had the final say of the half, getting goals from Carpenter Warren and Carl Dowzicky to make it a 10-8 game at the break.
The Blue Jays came out of the lockerroom firing, scoring three unanswered goals to push out to a 13-8 lead. Navy got one back before the horn to make it a four-goal lead heading into the fourth. Hopkins came out strong to start the final quarter, with back-to-back goals from Hopkins and Fraser to push out to 15-9 lead. But that's when things got interesting as Navy rattled off four goals in less than two minutes to pull within two with 2:45 to play. Warren then made it a one-goal game with his goal at the 1:06-mark. Hopkins ran out the shot clock on the ensuing possession and Navy took over with 36 seconds to go. Hopkins then intercepted a Navy pass, his sixth steal of the game, to regain possession for JHU. The Blue Jays were able to run off all but one second before turning the ball over and the Mids never got a final shot off.
Hopkins led the Blue Jays with seven goals, two shy of his career high, while also grabbing six steals and blocking four shots. Beal scored and handed out three assists to go along with two steals. Fraser finished with a hat trick and two ejections drawn, while junior Langdon Froomer totaled five points (2g, 3a), three steals and three ejections drawn. Junior Erik Henrikson made nine saves, grabbed four steals and dished two assists. Warren led the Mids with five goals, while Patterson added a hat trick.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, November 1 as the Blue Jays and Mids meet in a rematch in Annapolis. The final match of the regular season is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
