CLAREMONT, CA - The Johns Hopkins water polo team went 1-3 at the annual Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament against four of the top 10 teams in Division III this past weekend. Hopkins beat fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, but fell to top-ranked Whittier, fifth-ranked Chapman and ninth-ranked Redlands. In addition, JHU also finished as the runner-up at the inaugural USA Water Polo Division III National Championship. The Blue Jays slip to 6-6 on the season.

The USA Water Polo DIII National Championship featured the top two teams from the East and the top two teams from the West from the 2013 season. Hopkins faced off against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the first semifinal, while Whittier took on MIT in the second semifinal. The winners faced off for the USA Water Polo DIII National Championship.

Hopkins opened the weekend against Chapman, suffering an 11-6 loss. The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Blue Jays battled back to tie it late in the second quarter. Chapman answered with a 6-1 run that bridged halftime and saw the Panthers build their lead to 8-3 with 2:34 to go in the third quarter. The teams traded goals over the remainder of the game and Chapman took the 11-6 win.

Junior Garrett Davidson led the Blue Jays with a pair of goals while senior Johnny Beal had a goal and an assist. Junior Erik Henrikson made five saves and freshman John Wilson made three stops as they pair split time in the cage.

Hopkins then dropped a tough 8-7 decision to Redlands in the afternoon. The Bulldogs got on the board first, but the Jays answered with three straight to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first. The teams then traded two-goal spurts and Hopkins led 5-3 at the half. It was a different Bulldog team that came out of the lockerroom as they outscored the Blue Jays 5-2 in the final 16 minutes to pull out the come-from-behind win.

Beal finished with two goals and two assists, senior Wes Hopkins chipped in two goals and junior Kevin Yee scored and added a pair of assists. Henrikson turned aside 13 shots and grabbed three steals in the loss.

Saturday morning, Hopkins got five goals from Beal as the Blue Jays beat the Stags, 15-10. It was a tightly contested first half that saw Claremont-Mudd-Scripps take a 7-6 lead at the half. But the Blue Jays came flying out of the lockerroom to start the third period as they outscored the Stags, 5-0, in the stanza. The fourth quarter was more like the first two as JHU had just a one-goal advantage in the period (4-3) to take the 15-10 win.

Beal finished with the five goals while also handing out two assists and drawing two ejections. Junior Langdon Froomer and freshman Jono Gillette each tallied three points (2g, 1a). Froomer also grabbed three steals and drew two ejections while Yee also drew three ejections. Henrikson posted seven saves to earn the win.

Hopkins closed out the weekend with an 11-9 loss to Whittier. The Poets jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the first period was half over, but the Blue Jays answered with a three-goal run of their own to tie it with 1:11 to play in the quarter. Whitter would have the final say however, scoring a pair of goals in the final 37 seconds to take a 5-3 lead at the break.

Whitter picked up where it left off to open the second, pushing out to a 7-3 lead before Hopkins got back-to-back goals to make it a 7-5 game with under two minutes to play in the half. Whitter wasn't done yet and got one more before the final horn to go up 8-5 at the half. The teams traded goals over the remainder of the game, as the Blue Jays could get no closer than the two-goal differential. Beal and Hopkins each scored three goals to lead the Jays in the loss.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 11 as the Blue Jays make the short trip to Washington, DC to take on the George Washington Colonials. The CWPA Southern Division match is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
