Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing the Weekend (11-07-14)

Nov. 7, 2014 Sophomore Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August 2013. An experienced writer, he will bolster the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implications, will lead the column each week).

Football
The Johns Hopkins football team can clinch a sixth-straight Centennial Conference title with a win at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.
Hopkins (8-0, 7-0 in CC competition) already holds the tiebreaker against Muhlenberg, which is the only team still capable of challenging the Blue Jays for conference supremacy. A victory against the Diplomats would keep the Jays from finishing with anything worse than the same record as the Mules.
However, the Diplomats (5-3, 4-3) could give the Blue Jays a run for their money. They feature a dangerous running back duo in Scott LaValva and Taalib Gerald, who have combined to rush for 1,023 yards and 10 touchdowns. Additionally, they field a defense that has held opponents to an average of 22.6 points per game this year.
Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET.

Field Hockey
The Johns Hopkins field hockey team proved its grit with a thrilling comeback win over Washington College in the first round of the Centennial Conference tournament on Wednesday night.
The Blue Jays will need to bring that same mental toughness with them to Ursinus on Saturday afternoon. The Bears went undefeated in CC competition this season and hold the top seed in the tournament. They also boast a dangerous trio of scorers in Danielle Strong, Megan Keenan and Devin Brakel (47 goals combined) and one of the best goalies in the conference in Danielle DeSpirito (1.41 GAA, .750 save percentage).
However, JHU can take some confidence from the fact that they played well against Ursinus in the regular season. The Blue Jays fell 2-0 in a hard fought match at Homewood Field.
Match time is 12:00 p.m.

Women's Soccer
The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team will head to Gettysburg, PA, this weekend with hopes of repeating as Centennial Conference champions.
As the second seed in the conference tournament, the Blue Jays will face the third-seeded Ursinus Bears on Saturday. If they emerge victorious, they will advance to the championship match on Sunday. At that point, JHU would either face top-seeded Gettysburg or fifth-seeded Swarthmore.
The road to a second-straight title, and 12th overall, will be far from easy, but the Blue Jays can look to a number of experienced veterans for leadership. One such player is senior Hannah Kronick, who is the conference's all-time leader in goals, assists, and points.
Saturday's match is slated 4:00 p.m. while Sunday's championship match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Water Polo
The Johns Hopkins men's water polo team will spend the weekend in Princeton, NJ, as they compete in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Championship.
The tournament will pit Hopkins against George Washington on Friday (4:50 p.m. ET) and against Salem International on Saturday (11:30 a.m. ET). Depending on how the Blue Jays fair, the team could play up to two additional games before the end of the tournament on Sunday. The results of the championship will help set the field for the 2014 CWPA Championship as the top five teams from the Southern Division Championship will join the top three teams from the Northern Division Championship as well as four at-large selections for a chance to play for the league title November 21-23, at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, MD.

Wrestling
