Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing the Weekend (02-21-14)

Feb. 21, 2014

Wrestling
The Johns Hopkins wrestling team will look to continue an already stellar year when it travels to Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA, this weekend for the 2014 Centennial Conference Championship.
The Blue Jays have gone 10-5 overall and 7-1 in CC competition thus far this season and, behind the efforts of wrestlers like junior Paul Bewak (29-1) and seniors Ray Yagloski (26-8) and Duncan Crystal (17-5), look poised to challenge for a conference title.
A major obstacle, however, stands in their way. Ursinus went 8-0 this year, handing JHU its only conference loss of the season in the process. And the Blue Jays can't afford to underestimate teams from Stevens Tech, the Merchant Marine Academy, and the rest of the schools in the CC.
JHU will have to be at its very best during the meet, which will run throughout Saturday.

Men's & Women's Basketball
Both the Johns Hopkins men's and women's basketball teams will make the quick trip east to Chestertown, MD, this weekend to wrap up the regular season against Washington College.
The stakes of those match-ups, however, will be somewhat different. The women (16-7, 13-4 in Centennial Conference competition) will take on the Shorewomen women (7-16, 6-11) with the hopes go grabbing the top seed in the CC Tournament. A Hopkins coupled with losses by Haverford and McDaniel would hand them the top seed in the CC tournament to the Blue Jays. Depending on how things play out, Hopkins could finish anywhere from the number one to number three seeds.
The men (14-10, 11-6), meanwhile, could finish as high as second or as low as fifth in the CC Tournament seeding. However, like the women, they run no risk of missing the tournament, regardless of how they play against WC (5-19, 4-13).
The women are scheduled to play at 2:00 pm ET and the men at 4:00 pm ET.

Men's Lacrosse
The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team will finish off a season-opening three-game home-stand when Michigan comes to Homewood Field on Saturday.
Hopkins has started the year strong with a 10-9 triple overtime victory over 17th-ranked Ohio State and a 15-8 rout of cross-town rival Towson. Players such as Wells Stanwick (10 assists) and Brandon Benn and Ryan Brown (6 goals apiece) have dominated thus far on the offensive end, while the team also features the third-ranked scoring defense in the nation.
The Blue Jays will have to keep it up against the Wolverines, who have notched 41 goals in their first three games and who field a dangerous scorer in Ian King. King has already found the net eight times this season.
Opening faceoff is slated for noon ET.

Women's Lacrosse
The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team will take on Bucknell at home on Saturday afternoon in the first of four straight home matches for the Blue Jays.
JHU has rolled in its first two contests, dropping Marquette and Mount St. Mary's by a combined score of 33-4. While Bucknell (0-2), on paper, appears to be headed towards a similar fate, the Bison will likely prove to be quite a challenge for the Blue Jays. Bucknell has held its own in losses to 8th-ranked Penn State and 13th-ranked Stony Brook and possesses a dangerous playmaker - Katelyn Miller, a senior midfielder, who has dished out four assists so far this season.
JHU will have to continue its solid defensive play and get the ball to scorers like Taylor D'Amore (7g, 7a) and Dene' DiMartino (7g) if it is to continue its early stretch of success.
Opening draw is slated for 4:00 pm ET.

Men's & Women's Indoor Track
A preview of the Centennial Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship awaits the Johns Hopkins men's and women's track teams in Haverford, PA, this weekend.
The Keough Invitational, scheduled for Saturday, will feature teams from Swarthmore, Haverford, Muhlenberg, and Ursinus, all of which the Blue Jays will see again next weekend at the Conference Championship.
The Invitational will run throughout the day.

Men's Tennis
The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team is in for a tough weekend of action at the 2014 ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Cleveland, OH. Hopkins kicks off the weekend against sixth-ranked Emory, a five-time winner of the championship. Hopkins has never finished higher than fifth in its three previous trips to the ITA Indoor Team Championship. The action will be the Blue Jays' first since mid-October and marks the beginning of the spring season.
The Blue Jays and the Eagles are slated to take to the court at 2:30 pm.
