ST. MARYS CITY, MD - The No. 6 ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer held off No. 8 Montclair State 2-1 in the Jays season opener at St. Mary's (MD).
Sydney Teng's second half goal proved to be the eventual game-winner.
The scoring started for JHU in the first half, when a Montclair defender knocked the ball into her goal, for an own goal. Hopkins registered four shots in the first half, and attempted five corners, but were unable to add to the one goal lead heading into halftime.
The second half featured more action than the first, with a goal coming from Montclair's Kaila Fasano in the 60th minute off of a rebound from a missed shot by teammate Jessica Bonjilone.
After a miss by Ana Bengoechea in the 69th minute, Teng found the back of the net in the 71st minute off of an assist by Maria Touloumes. The goal came on Teng's third shot of the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Clara Aranguren turned back two shots and got the win for the Jays. Senior forward Hannah Kronick tallied three shots. On the night the Blue Jays outshot Montclair 11-8 and attempted 10 corners to Montclair's one.
The Jays will be in action tomorrow as they face St. John Fisher tomorrow at 2 pm.
