Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing the Weekend (09-19-14)

Sept. 19, 2014 Sophomore Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August 2013. An experienced writer, he will bolster the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implications, will lead the column each week).

Football
Fans of the Johns Hopkins football team are in for a treat this Saturday as the Blue Jays will take on Moravian at Homewood Field in a clash of unbeaten Centennial Conference rivals.

Both teams have won their first two games by large margins and have done so by playing swarming defense and putting the ball in the hands of their running backs. JHU has held its opponents to 11.5 points per game and relied on running backs Stuart Walters and Brandon Cherry (392 rushing yards combined) to move the chains. Moravian has had similar success with its defense and rushing tandem of Eli Redmond and Chris Negron.

The Blue Jays will have to continue to play smash mouth, mistake-free football and find the openings in the Greyhound defense if they are to remain undefeated. Game time is noon ET.

Water Polo
Johns Hopkins water polo aficionados will have not one, but two chances to catch the Blue Jays in action this weekend.

JHU (3-3) will play host to Princeton on Saturday and to Bucknell on Sunday. The matches will provide the Blue Jays with a shot at redemption as the team has lost to both opponents in recent weeks by a combined margin of four goals.

If JHU is to succeed, it will have to put Jono Gillette, Langdon Froomer and its other offensive weapons in position to score and hold the Tigers and Bison at bay on the other side of the pool.

Both matches are set to start at 11 a.m. ET.

Field Hockey
After two straight shutout losses, the Johns Hopkins field hockey team will look to turn things around this Saturday with a win against Washington College in its first match of the Centennial Conference season.

Knocking off the Shorewomen, however, will not be an easy task for the Blue Jays (3-3). Washington College (5-0) has held its opponents to three goals combined so far this season and fields a dangerous scoring duo in Jenn Miller and Elizabeth Davis. JHU will need strong outings from starting goalie Greta Helvie and its various scorers to come away with the victory.

Game time is 5 p.m. ET.

Volleyball
Fresh off a 3-1 victory over a strong Susquehanna squad on Wednesday night, the Johns Hopkins volleyball team will look to add to its momentum with a strong showing at the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic this weekend.

The tournament will pit Hopkins (4-8) against York and SUNY New Paltz on Saturday and against Lebanon Valley and Elizabethtown - whose mascot is also the Blue Jay - on Sunday.

Men's & Women's Soccer
Both the Johns Hopkins men's and women's soccer teams will kick off their Centennial Conference seasons on the road this Saturday.

The men (4-1-1) will play at Haverford in Pennsylvania while the women (6-2) will play at Washington College on the Eastern Shore. Men's soccer is coming off its first loss of the season, a tough 1-0 loss at perennial power York on Wednesday night. The Fords are also coming off a disappointing loss in their last outing.

Women's soccer has won four straight and allowed just one goal during that same stretch. Senior Hannah Kronick the all-time points leader in the Centennial Conference with 173, needs just one goal to also break the conference's all-time goals record (71).

Both squads have looked dangerous so far this year and figure to be in the running for conference titles later in the fall.

Women's Tennis
The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team will head to Fredericksburg, VA, this weekend for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional. The tournament will run from Saturday to Monday.

Last season, then freshman Amanda Austi made it to the finals of the championship singles draw while the Blue Jays also had a pair of teams in the semifinals of the championship doubles draw.
