Princeton Box Score
BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins water polo team made history Saturday at the Newton White Athletic Center when the Blue Jays defeated the eighth-ranked Princeton Tigers, 10-9. Hopkins became the first Division III team to defeat a team ranked in the top-10 of the CWPA National Poll. The Blue Jays improve to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the CWPA Southern Division with the win. The Tigers meanwhile, suffer their first loss of the season as they fall to 6-1 and 1-1 in the league.
With the game tied at nine as the clock ticked under two, it was senior co-captain Johnny Beal that played the hero for the Blue Jays. His third goal of the game gave Hopkins a 10-9 lead with 48 ticks to play. Coming off a turnover on a Princeton six-on-five, junior Garrett Davidson passed the ball to Beal up high, who pumped and then fired a shot past into the Tigers' goal. On the ensuing possession, Princeton fired high of the Hopkins net and the Blue Jays were able to run out the remainder of the clock.
The teams traded goals in the first quarter and Hopkins held a 3-2 lead on a Langdon Froomer at the end of the opening quarter. Freshman Jono Gillette pushed the lead to two midway through the second quarter, but the Tigers answered with back-to-back goals to make it a tie game at the half. The teams once again traded goals to start the third quarter and the score was knotted at six all with 6:07 to go. Princeton briefly took the lead on a goal from Jordan Colina, but it was answered with a goal from senior co-captain Wes Hopkins just 54 seconds later.
Drew Hoffenberg put Princeton back on top with 2:57 to play in the third quarter. But back-to-back goals from Beal and Gillette to start the fourth swung the lead back in Hopkins favor. Princeton battled back and tied the game with Connor McGoldrick's goal at the 1:28-mark. That just set the stage for Beal's late-game winner.
The win over Princeton is just the fifth all-time for Hopkins and first since an 11-10 win over the Tigers on September 23, 2011. Beal and Froomer led the Blue Jays with three goals apiece, while Hopkins and Davidson each had two helpers. Junior Erik Henrikson had a great game in the cage, finishing with a career-high 18 saves. His 18 stops were the third most in school history.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 21 as the Blue Jays host the Bucknell Bison. The CWPA Southern Division match is slated for an 11:00 am start at the Newton White Athletic Center.
