BALTIMORE, MD - The fifth ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team fell Wednesday night to visiting eighth ranked Messiah, 2-1. The loss was the first of the year for the Jays.
Hopkins hope for a comeback came in the form of a Hannah Kronick goal in the 75th minute. Kronick's goal came off her own rebound after her first shot hit the post. The goal was her second of the season.
Minutes later Hopkins at a chance for the equalizer as Alaina Arthur took a shot in front of the goal, but Ashley Locke blocked it near the goal line. Hopkins kept up the pressure as Alyssa Morgan took a shot that on goal that was wide before Sydney Teng took the final shot that was turned back by Audra Larson.
For Hopkins, all went wrong in the first six minutes, with an own goal allowed in the opening four minutes. Off of a blocked shot, the ball caromed off a Hopkins defender before bouncing in the net.
Marisa Weaver found the back of the net off a free kick by Kayla Deckert for Messiah's second goal. Weaver soared over the opposing Hopkins defenders and nailed a header in the top right corner past the outstretched arm of Hopkins goalkeeper Clara Aranguren.
Following the quick 2-0 start, play was even throughout with constant trading of possession by both teams. The game was very physical throughout with two yellow cards being called and many hard collisions throughout the field of play.
The Blue Jays travel this weekend to the Roanoke Invitational where they play 19th ranked Lynchburg on Saturday before playing host Roanoke on Sunday.
