PRINCETON, NJ - The Johns Hopkins water polo team dropped a pair of tough two-goal decisions to ranked teams on Sunday at the Princeton Invitational. Hopkins lost to 13th-ranked Princeton, 10-8, and to 18th-ranked Brown, 20-18, in overtime in games that were postponed a day due to lightning. The Blue Jays slip to 1-2 on the season with the losses. Junior Langdon Froomer led Hopkins with six goals and five assists on the day.

Hopkins took an early 1-0 lead over Princeton with a goal from freshman Jono Gillette. But Princeton answered with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead with just 2:53 to play in the opening quarter. Froomer tied it up just 23 seconds later, with the first of his three goals in the game, but with nine seconds to play in the stanza, Eric Bowen scored to put the Tigers up 3-2.

The teams traded goals to open the second quarter and Princeton led 4-3 at the 5:35-mark. The Tigers then scored five of the next six as they pushed out to a 9-4 lead with 2:56 to play in the third quarter. The Blue Jays answered with four straight goals, including two from Froomer, in an eight-minute span to pull within one. But a Connor McGoldrick goal with 2:10 to play seal Princeton's win.

Froomer scored three goals and added a pair of assists for the Blue Jays, while Gillette added two goals and one helper. Junior Erik Henrikson finished with 10 saves in the loss.

Hopkins then took on Brown as the two teams combined for 38 goals and needed extra time to decide a winner. Senior co-captain Wes Hopkins scored a team-high four goals, while Froomer, Gillette and junior Garrett Davidson each had a hat trick.

It was a back-and-forth game for the first 10 minutes as the teams traded goals and were tied at six apiece with 6:28 to play in the second. Senior co-captain Johnny Beal then scored back-to-back goals in a 30-second span to give Hopkins a two-goal lead. Luke Irwin cut the lead in half with a goal for the Bears but the Blue Jays came right back with goals from sophomore Bret Pinsker and Hopkins to give JHU a 10-7 lead at the 2:41-mark in the quarter.

The teams went back to trading goals over the ensuing three minutes and Hopkins led 13-10 just 38 seconds into the third quarter. The Bears then scored four straight goals in less than five minutes to take a 14-13 lead. Davidson stemmed the tide and tied the game with his third goal of the game with 37 ticks on the clock. But a Bears' goal by Rico Burke in the waning seconds gave Brown a 15-14 lead heading into the fourth.

Hopkins opened the fourth with three straight goals to take a 17-15 lead with 3:56 on the clock. But Brown battled back and scored the next two goals, including the game-tying goal with three seconds remaining to force overtime. Brown picked up where it left off in the first overtime, scoring two goals to push out to a 19-17 lead. Hopkins cut the lead in half in the second overtime, but Brown would have the final say with a late goal in the second OT.
