Jan. 24, 2015 TOWSON, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's swim team suffered it first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to Division I Towson by a 193-91 score. The Blue Jays slip to 6-1 on the season while the Tigers remain unbeaten at 10-0. Senior Ana Bogdanovski picked up a win for the Jays in the 100 Free.
Hopkins opened the meet with second and third-place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay. Freshman Michelle Kim, sophomore Pilar Shimizu, freshman Anna Wisniewski and Bogdanovski finished in second with a time of 1:46.68. Sophomore Hannah Benn, freshman Gwynnie LaMastra, sophomore Abby Brown and senior Kylie Holden then took third in 1:50.52. Freshman Courtney Cowan was the top Blue Jay in the 1000 Free as she finished in a career-best 10:46.84 for fifth place. Bogdanovski then placed second in the 200 Free as she touched in 1:51.11, an NCAA provisional time.
Kim and Benn then went two-three in the 100 Back. Kim took second with a time of 59.24 while Benn finished in 1:00.51. The Blue Jays followed with second through fourth-place finishes in the 100 Breast. LaMastra finished in second as she clocked in at 1:05.88, followed by Shimizu in 1:08.58 and freshman Kaitlin Jones in 1:08.72. Brown was a third-place finisher in the 200 Fly as she touched in 2:08.79. Wisniewski then placed third in the 50 Free with a time of 24.82 while Holden took fourth in 25.13.
Bogdanovski followed with her win in the 100 Free as she beat the field with a time of 51.66. Kim was top Blue Jay in the 200 Back as she finished in fourth place in 2:10.06. LaMastra then placed second in the 200 Breast with an NCAA provisional time of 2:23.12. Freshman Sara Wujciak followed in fourth place as she finished in 2:27.97. Sophomore Emily Lubin led a group of Blue Jays that went two through five in the 500 Free. Lubin led the pack with a time of 5:22.71, followed by junior Ellen Marcus (5:22.89), Benn (5:25.44) and freshman Sarah Fauska (5:35.21).
The Blue Jays did the same in the 100 Fly, led by Wisniewski with a time of 57.68. Brown finished in 59.32 for third, followed by sophomore Shirley Chan (59.67) and Holden (1:00.39). Wisniewski then placed second in the 200 IM as she touched in 2:07.90 while senior Sammi Fox placed third (2:13.89) and Wujciak took fourth (2:15.70).
Hopkins closed out the meet by taking second through fifth in the 400 Free Relay. Lubin, freshmen Lena Bless and Natalia Rincon and Holden finished in 3:35.14 for second place. Bogdanovski, Shimizu, Jones and Fox followed in 3:44.43 while Marcus, Benn, Wujciak and junior Sean McGrath combined for a time of 3:51.95. Taking fifth place was the team of sophomores Kristen Kaiser and Lindsay Kriz, Fauska and freshman Lena DiPrizito with a time of 3:53.49.
Hopkins is back in action on Wednesday, January 28 as the Blue Jays travel to Annapolis to take on the Navy Midshipmen. The meet is slated for 5:00 pm at Lejeune Hall.
