Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing the Weekend (1-30-15)

Jan. 30, 2015 Sophomore Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August 2013. An experienced writer, he bolsters the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implications, will lead the column each week.)

Basketball
Hoops fans in Charles Village will have the chance to catch both the Johns Hopkins men's and women's basketball teams in action this weekend.

The Blue Jays are scheduled to take on their counterparts from Haverford in a doubleheader at Goldfarb Gym on Saturday.

At 1:00 p.m. ET, the men's team (16-2, 10-1 in Centennial Conference play) will look to tighten its grip on the top spot in the conference with a win over the Haverford men (6-12, 3-8). Later, at 3:00 p.m. ET, the women's team will try to secure a signature against the Haverford women's team. The Fords (12-6, 10-1) sit second in the conference standings and defeated the Jays earlier this season, 51-47.

Both Blue Jays squads have been impressive so far this season, and feature a number of the top players in the conference. Jimmy Hammer of the men's team is currently fourth in the CC in points (15.5 per game) and third in three-point percentage (46.4). Meanwhile, on the women's side, Haley Bush is second in field goal percentage (60.4) in the conference.

In addition to the day being marked by key conference games for the Hopkins squads, it is also alumni day for the Blue Jays. An alumni basketball game will take place in Goldfarb prior to the start of the men's game. Additionally, this game will serve as the annual Wall-O'Mahony game, with an MVP of each team being announced at the conclusion of the men's game.

Track
The Johns Hopkins men's and women's track teams are in for a hectic weekend as they will send some of their athletes to the Bucknell Open and others to the Patriot Games at George Mason University.

The Bucknell Open will take place in Lewisburg, PA, and the Patriot Games will be held in Fairfax, VA. The two events will run throughout Friday and Saturday.

Both the men's and women's teams have looked strong so far this season. The men placed third and the women placed ninth at the annual Maryland Invitational two weeks ago. On the men's side, Tyler Wolfe came out on top in the 5000-meter run, while Frances Loeb and Sophia Meehan led the women's team with first place finishes in the one-mile and the 3000-meter runs, respectively.

The Johns Hopkins men's and women's swimming teams are scheduled to compete against Mary Washington in Baltimore at 6 p.m. ET on Friday. The meet will mark the last event for both teams before they begin preparing for the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship and the NCAA Championship.
