Johns Hopkins Defeats Franklin & Marshall, 173-84

Sophomore Jan Hagemeister won a pair of events Friday night.


LANCASTER, PA – The Johns Hopkins men's swim team won 11 of the first 12 events en route to a 173-84 win over host Franklin & Marshall Friday night. The Blue Jays improve to 3-0-1 on the season while the Diplomats fall to 0-3. Sophomore Jan Hagemeister and freshman Erik Bostrom each won two events to lead Hopkins on the night.

The Blue Jays opened the meet by sweeping the top three spots in the 600 Medley Relay. The team of freshman Darren Loh, junior Evan Holder, sophomores Mark Wilson and Kyle Otazu grabbed the win with a time of 5:32.21. Taking second place were Hagemeister, sophomore Colburn Yu, Bostrom and sophomore Michael Ashmead in 5:44.75. Rounding out the sweep were junior Patrick Flynn, freshman Peter Lazorchak, senior Billy Gravley and freshman John Chu in 5:51.33.

Bostrom and junior Josh Hughes then went one-two in the 1000 Free, adding 13 points to the Blue Jays' score. Bostrom earned the win as he touched in 9:53.15 while Hughes followed in 0:08.48. The Blue Jays did one better in the next two events, sweeping first through third in the 200 Free and 50 Back. Sophomore Davis Knox grabbed the top spot in the 200 Free as he clocked in at 1:46.57. Sophomore Luke Johnson finished in 1:48.26 for second and senior Mickey McGoldrick touched in 1:53.25. Hagemeister earned the win in the 50 Back, edging out freshman Emile Kuyl by two-hundredths of a second to win in 24.90. Senior Alex Lambert then took third place in 25.86.

Yu grabbed first place in the 50 Breast, finishing in 28.09, while freshman Jonah Giuliano took third in 29.47. Otazu followed with a win in the 100 Fly, leading a contingent of Blue Jays that took the top three spots. He touched in 52.17, followed by freshman Michael Wohl (53.83) and sophomore Austin Wilson (54.72). Chu then placed second in the 50 Free in 22.65, beating out Knox, who finished in 22.72 for third. Hopkins then swept first through fourth in the 100 Free, led by Ashmead with a winning time of 47.50. Chu finished in 48.46, trailed by Johnson (48.83) and Wohl (48.97).

The Blue Jays turned the same trick in the 100 Back with sophomore Andrew Gibson leading the charge. He touched in 53.85, to beat Hagemeister by three-hundredths of a second. Flynn finished in third (55.46) and sophomore Ronan Corgel finished in fourth (56.22). Mark Wilson then won the 100 Breast with a time of 59.84. Lazorchak followed in second (1:00.35) and Yu took third (1:01.42). The Blue Jays followed with a sweep of first through fourth in the 500 Free. Bostrom led the way with his second win of the night, clocking in at 4:46.57. Hughes touched in 4:53.28 to beat out Gravley (4:53.93) for third. McGoldrick then took fourth in 4:54.32. In the final event before swimming exhibitions, Hagemeister earned his second win with a time of 24.65 in the 50 Fly, beating Wohl by five-hundredths of a second.

Hopkins is idle until the first week of December when the Blue Jays travel to Gambier, OH for Kenyon's annual Total Performance Invitational December 3-5.
