Johns Hopkins Defeats Boston College and MIT

WALTHAM, MA – The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team won two of its matches at the annual Brandeis Invitational on Sunday, defeating Boston College and MIT. Hopkins dropped decisions to Brandeis, Brown and Yale. The Blue Jays improve to 8-6 on the season as they head into the holidays. Senior Jay Petrie reached another milestone in his career as he earned his 250th career win.

How it Happened
• Hopkins opened with a tough 14-13 loss to host Brandeis, with the Blue Jays grabbing a win in the Epee (5-4). Sophomore Sandy Vingoe led the Blue Jays in the Sabre (4-5) with a pair of wins, while Petrie went unbeaten in the Foil versus the Judges. In the Epee, sophomores Denis Routkevitch and Matthias Philippine each won two bouts and Routkevitch clinched the win in the final bout.
• The Blue Jays then won the Sabre and Foil by 7-2 scores to fuel a 15-12 win over the BC Eagles. Junior Patrick Rose paced Hopkins with three wins in the Sabre and senior Glenn Balbus turned the same trick in the Foil. Routkevitch got the Blue Jays' lone win in an 8-1 loss in the Epee.
• Brown followed with a 16-11 win over Hopkins, despite wins in the Sabre (5-4) and Foil (5-4) by the Blue Jays. Vingoe and Rose each won two bouts, and Vingoe clinched the win in the Sabre. Petrie led the Foil squad with a 3-0 round while Balbus secured the win in the ninth bout. The Bears' Epee squad picked up an 8-1 win to grab the overall win, with Philippine earning the Jays' win.
• Hopkins picked up a big win in the next round, topping MIT 18-9. The Blue Jays swept the Foil (9-0) and pulled out a close win in the Epee (5-4) to grab the team win. Vingoe won two bouts in the Sabre in a 5-4 loss to the Engineers. Balbus, Petrie and sophomore Ian Maddox each went unbeaten in the Blue Jays' win in the Foil. Philippine won two of his bouts and clinched the win in the Epee for JHU.
• Yale handed Hopkins a 20-7 loss in the final round, sweeping all three weapons in the process. The Bulldogs edged the Blue Jays in the Sabre, 5-4, and then won 6-3 in the Foil and 9-0 in the Epee.

What it Means
• The win over MIT was the 225th career win for head coach Austin Young.
• Senior Jay Petrie earned his 250th career win in the Foil with his first win of the round versus Boston College. He now ranks 11th all-time in program history in wins and is fifth among Foilists.
• Hopkins is now 7-5 against Boston College and has won four straight in the series. The Blue Jays are 11-6 versus the Engineers and has won three in a row.
