Feb. 20, 2015 ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team picked up three more wins on Saturday at the MACFA meet hosted by Navy. Hopkins earned wins over William & Mary (20-7), Maryland (24-3) and host Navy (20-7). The Blue Jays are now 15-5 on the season and were led by freshmen Ian Maddox and David Austin with eight wins each.
Hopkins opened the day against William & Mary and grabbed wins in the Foil and Sabre. Maddox led the Blue Jays to a 9-0 win in the Foil with three wins. In the Epee, the Tribe pulled out a 5-4 win despite two wins each from freshmen Matthias Philippine and Milan Patel. Hopkins then claimed the Sabre with a 7-2 win, led by Austin's three wins.
The Jays then took on the Terps and swept all three weapons, by 8-1 scores. Maddox and juniors Glenn Balbus and Jay Petrie each won two bouts to lead Hopkins in the Foil. In the Epee, it was junior Mark Zimmermann with three wins to pace the Jays. And in the Sabre, Austin and senior Aravind Menon combined for six wins.
Hopkins wrapped up the day with a sweep of all three weapons versus Navy. Maddox, junior Jonathan Mui and freshman Jared LeBron combined to win all nine bouts in the Foil The Blue Jays then edged the Mids, 5-4, in the Epee. Patel led Hopkins win two wins while Philippine clinched the win in the final bout.
Maddox led the Foil squad with an 8-1 record on the day as he improves to 33-14 on the season. Philippine's five wins led the Epee squad as he went 5-1 to move his season record to 19-9. And in the Sabre, Austin went 8-1 for the Jays and is now 26-12 this season.
Hopkins is back in action on Sunday, March 1 as the Blue Jays host the MACFA Championship. Hopkins is seeking its third straight and 28th overall MACFA Championship.
