BALTIMORE, MD - The 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team dropped a tough 12-10 overtime contest to Charles Street rival and 14th-ranked Loyola on Wednesday night at the Ridley Athletic Complex. The Blue Jays drop to 2-2 on the season while the Greyhounds pick up their first win to improve to 1-1.
Kara Burke put the Greyhounds on the board just 2:16 into the contest when she caught a pass from Annie Thomas, cradled and then scored on a sidearm shot while falling to the turf. The Blue Jays answered with back-to-back goals in a 70-second span to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Haley Schweizer tied the game when she dodged hard and then blew a shot past Molly Wolf from six yards out at 20:19. Freshman Emily Kenul then cashed in a on a free position shot to put the Blue Jays ahead.
The teams followed with a three-goal spurt in just 66 seconds that saw the game tied at three-all with 16:39 to play. Burke evened the score at 2-2 with a free position goal, but that lasted just 39 seconds as Schweizer got her second of the night at 17:06. She dodged down the left alley cut inside and then scored from in tight to give Hopkins back the lead. But Loyola came right back when Maddy Blakeman dodged through traffic and scored high-to-low at 16:39.
The Blue Jays responded with back-to-back goals from juniors Dene' DiMartino and Jenna Reifler to go up 5-3. DiMartino converted a free position shot at 12:20 and just 59 seconds later Reifler curled from behind the cage, took a pass from Kenul and went low for the score. The Greyhounds cut the deficit in half at the 10:30-mark when Hannah Schmitt scored off a hard dodge through traffic. But Hopkins would have the final say of the half when freshman CeCe Finney dodged from right goal line extended and went low on Wolf to make it a 6-4 game with 6:59 to play.
Loyola started the second half the way it started the first, with a quick goal. Sydney Thomas took a pass from Molly Hulseman and scored from the doorstep just 1:58 in to make it a 6-5 game. Hopkins once again answered with a pair of quick goals as the Jays pushed out to a three-goal lead with 25:29 to play. Schweizer completed her first career hat trick with just four minutes gone in the half on a hard shot that picked the top left corner from six yards out. Just 31 seconds later, DiMartino scored on a rocket of a shot from the top of the fan for her second of the night.
The Greyhounds came storming back with three goals in just over three minutes to knot the score for the fourth time. Schmitt sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike by Katrina Geiger as the `Hounds pulled even. After that, the pace slowed for more than 14 minutes as neither team could find the go-ahead goal. It was Loyola that finally broke through with 5:01 to play when Schmitt found Hulseman in traffic for her second of the night. The Greyhounds added to their lead exactly one minute later. Off the ensuing draw, the Blue Jays were pressing out to try and get the ball back. From about 20 yards out, Schmitt found Sydney Thomas open near the crease for a one-one with sophomore Caroline Federico.
Loyola once again one the draw but turned the ball over with 2:30 to play and Hopkins quickly cleared. DiMartino then pulled the Blue Jays within one just 10 seconds later as she scored on a sidearm shot while fading to her right in the slot. The goal ended a scoreless drought of 23:09 for the Blue Jays. The Greyhounds came up with the draw, but sophomore Claudia Flister checked the ball away from Schmitt and junior Josie George pounced on the ground ball. Hopkins cleared and with 8.2 seconds left, got the game-tying goal when sophomore Alexis Maffucci swatted a loose ball past Wolf.
Hulseman put the Greyhounds up with 3:04 to play in the first overtime as she quick sticked a pass from Schmitt in traffic to make it an 11-10 game. Hopkins came up with the draw on the restart but Loyola forced a turnover with 2:11 to play and quickly called timeout. After running time off the clock, Schmitt put a cap in the scoring with a goal on an open net with 58.4 seconds to go.
Schweizer and DiMartino led the Blue Jays with a hat trick each while Kenul had a goal and an assist. Schweizer also had a game and career-best five draws while DiMartino had four. Federico finished with four saves while senior KC Emerson had one in the first half. Schmitt led the Greyhounds with four goals and three assists, while Hulseman, Burke and Sydney Thomas each had a pair of goals. Wolf finished with four saves in the earning the win.
Hopkins is back in action on Sunday, March 1 as the Blue Jays travel to Washington, DC to take on the American Eagles. Opening draw at Jacobs Field is slated for 1:00 pm.
