Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing the Weekend (3-14-15)

March 13, 2015 Sophomore Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August 2013. An experienced writer, he bolsters the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implications, will lead the column each week.)

Men's Basketball
The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team will make its first appearance in the Sweet 16 since 1990 on Friday night. The 15th-ranked Blue Jays are slated to face off against fourth-ranked Babson in Babson Park, MA.
JHU advanced to the Sweet 16 after topping Skidmore, 61-58, at Goldfarb Gym last weekend. Senior Jimmy Hammer led the way for the Blue Jays with 16 points as Hopkins secured a school-record 25th win on the season.
There are no easy wins in the NCAA Tournament and venturing onto enemy soil makes the challenge even greater. Hopkins will look to its veteran leadership as it looks to move to NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in school history. The winner of the JHU-Babson game will play the winner of the Trinity (CT)-Bates game on Saturday at 7 pm with a trip to the final four on the line.
Tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Track
Both the Johns Hopkins men's and women's track teams will send some of their top athletes to Winston-Salem, NC, this weekend to compete in the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Andrew Bartnett and Andrew Carey will represent the men's team in the pole vault and the 800 meter, respectively. Meanwhile, for the women, Tess Meehan will compete in the mile and Frances Loeb, Sophia Meehan, and Bridgett Gottlieb will all participate in the 5000 meter. Additionally, Sophia Meehan and Loeb will race in the 3000 meter and the team of Ingrid Johnson, Megan McDonald, Caroline Smith and Tess Meehan will look to prove their mettle in the distance medley relay.
Each of Hopkins' entries is highly-ranked entering the championship and could contend for national championships in each event. Hopkins' team score on the men's and women's side is dictated by its placement in each individual/relay event.
The Championships will run throughout the day on Friday and Saturday.

Men's Lacrosse
The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team will take its best shot at top-ranked Syracuse on Saturday.
However, pulling off the upset against the Orange (5-0) will be no small matter for the 17th-ranked Blue Jays (3-3). Syracuse is sixth in the nation in both scoring offense (15.20 goals per game) and scoring defense (7.40) and fields four players who have already notched at least 10 goals this season.
Hopkins counters with a balanced offense of its own that is paced by junior Ryan Brown (21 goals) and senior Wells Stanwick (14 assists). An emerging freshman class continues to impress and will need to be on-point in its first trip to the Dome.
Match time is 2:00 p.m. ET.

Women's Lacrosse
After recording a dominant 19-6 victory over American in its most recent game, the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team will look to add to its momentum with a win against Hofstra.
But the 20th-ranked Blue Jays (3-2) will have to be on their guard against the Pride (4-2), who boast a lethal attacker in Brittain Altomare. Altomare has posted 15 goals, 17 assists, and 32 points in just six games thus far.
This is first of three games in eight days for head coach Janine Tucker's team, which can build some momentum as it heads toward a challenging part of its 2015 schedule.
JHU and Hofstra are slated to square off at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Baseball
Due to inclement weather, the Johns Hopkins baseball team has had no choice but to postpone the start of its season for two weekends in a row.
This weekend, however, the Blue Jays will finally see their first action of the year during their annual trip to Fort Myers, Florida. JHU will play twelve games against a variety of teams over the course of eight days. The team will start by taking on Olivet on Friday, Minnesota-Morris and Keystone on Saturday, and Heidelberg on Sunday.
The Blue Jays will also face off against St. Lawrence, Keystone, Lasell, Bethel, Knox, UW-Stout, and UW-Platteville while in Florida before returning to Baltimore on March 21.
