HEMPSTEAD, NY - The 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team scored four goals in just over two minutes to turn a one-goal deficit into a three-goal lead en route to a 13-9 win over host Hofstra on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Shuart Stadium. The Blue Jays pick up their second straight win as they improve to 4-2 on the season while the Pride slip to 4-3.
Hofstra strung together three straight goals in the early going of the second half and took its first lead at 7-6 with 19:19 to play on a Becky Conto goal. Less than two minutes later, the game was tied for the third and final time when freshman CeCe Finney dodged from behind the goal, turned and fired home her second of the afternoon with 17:34 to play. Just 17 seconds later, the Blue Jays had taken the lead for good. Freshman Emily Kenul controlled the draw and the Jays were off and running. Finney would find Cook in the slot for the go-ahead goal, her sixth of the season.
Junior Jenna Reifler gave Hopkins a 9-7 lead with 16:33 to play, capping a three-goal spurt in just 61 seconds. Kenul earned a free position, and with three defenders in close proximity, she passed to a wide-open Reifler on the right post for the score. Junior Kristen Cannon capped the run at the 15:30-mark when she scored from a tough angle in the right alley for her second on the afternoon.
Hofstra pulled within two with 5:57 to play when Brittain Altomore scored on a roll-dodge from behind the crease. It was her first goal of the afternoon for the Pride's leading scorer and ended a scoreless streak for the home team that had surpassed 13 minutes. The Blue Jays answered with three straight goals, including a free position goal from DiMartino to push out to a 13-8 lead. Altomare would get one more before the final horn, on free position, to account for the 13-9 final.
Hopkins took a two-goal lead on strikes from sophomores Haley Schweizer and Alexis Maffucci in the game's opening seven minutes. Amanda Seekamp cut the deficit in half with an unassisted tally at the 21:15-mark. The teams went back-and-forth in the subsequent eight minutes and the Blue Jays led 4-2 after a rocket of a free position shot by Finney. Hopkins would go scoreless in the final 13:28 of the first as Hofstra got goals from Sam Lenox and Lindsey Alfano to make it a 4-4 game at the half.
Hopkins got a pair of quick goals to start the second and take a two-goal lead. Cannon scored while getting knocked to the ground at the 28:09 mark and just 23 seconds later, DiMartino beat Kelsey Gregerson despite being surrounded by five defenders. Tiana Parrella pulled the Pride back within one when she put home her own rebound after her original shot hit the post at 25:06. Carlee Ancona then tied the game on a free position shot and just over two minutes later, Hofstra had its first lead on Conto's goal.
DiMartino finished with three goals and four points for her 22nd career hat trick. Cannon, Finney and Kenul each finished with two goals as eight different players scored for the Blue Jays. Schweizer caused four turnovers and also had two ground balls and two draws. Senior KC Emerson got the win with a season-high 10 saves. Altomare led the Pride with four points (2g, 2a) and four draws. Parrella was the only other player for Hofstra to have a multi-point day (1g, 1a). April Iannetta added six ground balls and five caused turnovers for the defense, while Gregerson made five saves.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, March 18 as the Blue Jays travel to the Palmetto State to take on the Furman Paladins. Opening draw at Paladin Stadium is slated for 5:30 pm.
