GREENVILLE, SC - The 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team scored the game's first six goals en route to a 17-3 win over host Furman on Wednesday evening at Paladin Stadium. The Blue Jays pick up their third straight win as they improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Paladins suffer their second straight loss and fall to 5-2.
Junior Kristen Cannon got the Blue Jays on the board 5:38 into the contest with a free position goal from the top of the fan. Less than three minutes later, sophomore Haley Schweizer made a great cut down the right alley, caught a pass from junior Jenna Reifler and buried a shot just inside the far post. Thirty-four seconds later, the lead was three as the Blue Jays capitalized on a failed Paladin clear. Junior Jen Cook drew a double team at the top of the fan and then dumped the ball to a wide-open Alexis Maffucci for the score. The flurry of goals continued as Schweizer got her second of the game at the 19:43-mark, off a quick dish from Cook.
Junior Dene' DiMartino buried a free position shot with 14:29 to play in the half to push Hopkins' lead to five. Maffucci then capped the opening run with her second of the day at the 11:11-mark. After a Furman turnover in the clear and a great ground ball by Cannon to spark the transition, freshman Emily Kenul found a cutting Maffucci, who hitched once and went low on Maggie Friel for the score. The Paladins then got back-to-back goals from Ashley Trice and Britt Douglass in a span of 2:07 to cut the deficit to four with 8:08 to play.
The Blue Jays weren't done for the half however as they scored four goals in 1:46 to take a 10-2 lead into the lockerroom. DiMartino got the spurt going with her second of the afternoon and 100th of her career, off a nifty pass from Cook. Thirty-six seconds later, Cannon got her second of the game off a hard alley-dodge. Freshman CeCe Finney then scored back-to-back goals in a span of just 10 seconds to cap the first-half scoring.
The second half started much the same as the second as Hopkins scored five straight goals to push out to a 15-2 lead with 11:38 to play. Following a restart after a shot out of bounds, Maffucci dodged from behind the cage and beat Friel low for her first career hat trick. Cook and Kenul followed with goals just 52 seconds apart to stake Hopkins to an 11-goal lead. Midway through the half, senior defender Octavia Williams scooped up a ground ball off a Furman turnover and went end-to-end before scoring her first career goal.
Finney capped the run and completed her first career hat tricks as the Blue Jays cashed in off a failed Paladin clear. A great back-check and ground ball by Maffucci got the Jays back on offense. Reifler then found Finney for the score at the 11:38-mark. Alyssa Cooper got one back for Furman with an unassisted tally with 9:29 on the clock. Freshman Eden Epner then scored her first career goal off of Cook's fifth assist of the afternoon and classmate Shannon Fitzgerald closed out the scoring with a goal in transition.
Cook led the Blue Jays with six points and a career-best five assists. Maffucci and Finney each had hat tricks and five other Blue Jays had multi-point days. Schweizer caused three turnovers and controlled three draws while Williams had three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Douglass led the Paladins with two points (1g, 1a) and Frield made eight saves in the loss.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 21 as the Blue Jays host the Georgetown Hoyas. Opening draw is slated for 2:02 pm at Homewood Field. The game will be shown live on ESPN3 and on a tape-delayed basis on ESPNU on Sunday.
