BALTIMORE, MD - The 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team got goals from 11 different players en route to a 19-6 win over visiting American Monday afternoon at Homewood Field. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday at American, but was moved due to the winter storm that hit the area. The Blue Jays improve to 3-2 on the season while the Eagles fall to 1-4.
Hopkins took a quick two-goal lead on strikes by junior Dene' DiMartino and freshman Emily Kenul. But a Shauna Norris goal at the 25:48-mark cut the Blue Jays' lead in half. The Jays answered just 36 seconds later when sophomore Alexis Maffucci took a pass from junior Jenna Reifler and shot low on Rose Redfoot to spark a five-goal run. Junior Kristen Cannon fueled the run with a pair of goals, including a free position shot, as Hopkins pushed out to a 7-1 lead with 1:37 to play in the half.
American would have the final say of the half however, as Jessica Wojciechowski converted a free position to make it a five-goal game at the break. The Eagles picked up where they left off, scoring the first goal of the second half when Madison Hoon weaved through traffic and buried her shot to make it a 7-3 game with 28:11 still to play. The Blue Jays came right back however, scoring nine goals in just over eight minutes to take control of the game. Cannon got the run going, scoring just 11 seconds after Hoon, when she spun in traffic and scored on a sidearm shot to complete her first career hat trick.
DiMartino then sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from sophomore Haley Schweizer. Both of DiMartino's goals came from about six yards out as she blew two risers past Redfoot. Cannon found Schweizer in the slot and she scored stick-side high for the first of her two on the afternoon. Kenul completed her first hat trick with back-to-back goals just 26 seconds apart.
The Blue Jays weren't done yet though. Schweizer then scored off a nice feed from Maffucci to put Hopkins up 14-3 with 23:46 to play, Just 70 seconds late, freshman Shannon Fitzgerald dodged through traffic in the fan and beat Redfoot to the near post. Senior Jen Cook then capped the run, taking a goal line extended pass from Reifler and scoring from in-tight at 19:58.
American scored three of the next four in a 13-minute span to cut into the deficit and make it a 17-6 game. Freshman Maggie Friel and Chloe Duke closed out the scoring as they each scored their first career goal to account for the 19-6 final.
Cannon finished with a game and career-high five points (3g, 2a) while also grabbing three ground balls. Kenul and DiMartino also finished with hat tricks while Reifler had a career-high-tying three assists. Kenul and freshman Emily Verica each had three caused turnovers while senior KC Emerson made five saves in the first half to earn the win. Wojciechowski and Hoon scored two goals apiece for the Eagles and Redfoot finished with nine saves in the loss.
Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, March 14 as the Blue Jays travel to Hempstead, NY to take on the Hofstra Pride. Opening draw at Shuart Stadium is slated for 3:00 pm.
