FORT MYERS, FL - Jake Enterlin put together a fantastic pitching performance, but one bad bounce and lack of runs crossing home plate cost 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins in a 1-0 loss to UW-Platteville.
Enterlin, in his second outing of the season, had a no-hitter through seven innings, but Tanner Gaeleazzi ripped a double down the right field line to start the eighth. After two straight outs, Kyle Reinhart hit a chopper over the head of Hopkins' Mike Smith, scoring Gaeleazzi from second, and breaking a scoreless tie.
Hopkins went scoreless in their half of the eighth, but got the tying run on base in the ninth. With one out, Raul Shah doubled to left-center before moving to third on a Thomas Mee fly-out to right. Conor Reynolds was the last batter for the Jays, as he flew out to center for the last out of the game.
Though the Jays didn't score, they put together plenty of opportunities. In the second inning, with runners on second and third, Hopkins struck out to end the inning. Two innings later, Mee flew out to center with the bases loaded to end the inning. All told Hopkins left 11 men on base in the one run defeat.
Enterlin went the distance for the second time this season. After an error in the first by Reynolds allowed Collin Deboer to get on base, Enterlin kept UW-Platteville off the bases until the eighth. The hard throwing righty struck out seven while allowing just two hits and no walks. On the day, Enterlin recorded seven 1-2-3 innings.
Hopkins will head back to Baltimore for a meeting Tuesday at York (PA). The Jays head back north with an 8-3 record.
