Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing the Weekend (04-17-15)

April 17, 2015 Sophomore Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August 2013. An experienced writer, he will bolster the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implications, will lead the column each week).

Men's Lacrosse
The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team will have the advantage of playing in front of a homecoming crowd when it faces off against Michigan at Homewood Field on Saturday afternoon.

The support of alumni, students, faculty, and others could boost the spirits of the Blue Jays as they seek to improve their standing in the Big Ten Conference. JHU is currently third in the conference with a 2-1 record against Big Ten opponents (5-6 overall).

However, the Blue Jays will still have to be at their sharpest against the Wolverines. Michigan (1-2 in Big Ten competition, 5-6 overall) fields a number of dangerous players, such as attackmen Ian King and Kyle Jackson. King and Jackson have led the Wolverines on offense with a combined 31 goals and 45 total points so far this season.

JHU will likely look to its own ace, Ryan Brown, to counter the efforts of King and Jackson. Brown is third in the NCAA in goals per game with 3.73 and has notched 41 goals overall through eleven games.

Opening faceoff is set for 2:02 p.m. ET.

Live Stats

Baseball
The Johns Hopkins baseball team will seek to continue its recent success against Centennial Conference opponents during three games this weekend.

JHU, which has recorded victories in four of its last five CC games, will travel to Gettysburg for a game on Friday before facing Ursinus in a doubleheader at Stromberg Stadium on Saturday.

In recent games, the Blue Jays (7-3-1 against CC competition, 16-8-1 overall) relied on solid pitching and timely hitting from infielder Colin McCarthy and others to carry the day. They will likely attempt to employ the same formula this weekend.

Currently, JHU is second in the CC and trails Washington College (8-3) by half a game. The team with the best conference record at the end of the regular season will host the CC tournament from Apr. 30 to May 2.

Friday's game is slated to start at 3:30 p.m. ET while Saturday's games are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET and 3:30 p.m. ET.

Live Stats & Video

Track
The Johns Hopkins men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will send athletes to events throughout the Mid-Atlantic states this weekend.

The two teams are expected to compete in the Sam Ellis Invitational in Princeton, NJ, the Mt. St. Mary's Multi's in Emmitsburg, MD, and the Widener Invitational in Widener, PA. The Sam Ellis Invitational and the Mt. St. Mary's Invitational will both wrap up on Friday while the Widener Invitational will run until Saturday night.

The meets will give the men and women the chance to prepare for the Penn Relays and Centennial Conference Championships, both of which await the Blue Jays in the near future.

Tennis
The Johns Hopkins men's and women's tennis teams are in for a hectic weekend, as they will play a combined fives matches on Saturday and Sunday.

The men will remain in Baltimore and face Muhlenberg at 11:00 a.m. ET and Mary Washington at 3:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. The women, on the other hand, will have to divide and conquer. They will send athletes to compete against second-ranked Emory in Atlanta, GA, at 10:00 a.m. ET on Saturday while also hosting Muhlenberg at 11:00 a.m. ET on Saturday and Mary Washington at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Both the men and the women are currently in first place in the Centennial Conference and have yet to lose to a conference opponent. The teams with the best records against CC competition at the end of the year will host conference tournaments, which are scheduled to run from May 2 to May 3 for both the men and women.
