Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD -- The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team got an 18-of-24 performance on faceoffs from Drew Kennedy, a 13-save performance from Eric Schneider and nine different players had two or more points as the Blue Jays celebrated senior day by topping Michigan, 16-9, before a Homecoming crowd of 6,036. The victory evens Hopkins' record at 6-6 and clinches a spot in the inaugural Big Ten Tournament for the Blue Jays, who improve to 3-1 in league play.

Behind the play of Kennedy, Hopkins had a big advantage in possession from the outset and crafted a pair of early two-goal leads, only to have the Wolverines knot the game at 5-5 on consecutive goals by David McCormack and Mike Francia midway through the second quarter.

By the time the Wolverines (5-7, 1-3 Big 10) scored again nearly 14 minutes after Francia's extra-man goal, the Blue Jays had scored five straight to push out to a 10-5 lead and the Wolverines were never closer than three in the final 27:43.

Extra-man goals by Shack Stanwick and Holden Cattoni bookended the five-goal spree, which also included an unassisted strike by Connor Reed, a transition goal by Wells Stanwick and another goal by Cattoni.

The five-goal run wasn't all about the Blue Jay offense as Kennedy and Schneider helped fuel the run as well. Kennedy won 4-of-5 faceoffs during the five-goal flurry, while Schneider made four of his 13 saves during the spree.

Michigan had one final run after Hopkins took it's 10-5 lead as Kyle Jackson, Will Meter and Brendan Gaughan all scored unassisted goals in a span of 5:13 midway through the third quarter with only an unassisted goal by Ryan Brown for the Blue Jays during that time to make it 11-8 with just over two minutes remaining in the period.

But Kennedy, as he did all day, set the Blue Jays up with possession after Gaughan's goal and Brown added his second of the day with 1:24 left in the period to ignite another 5-0 Blue Jay run that made 16-8.

Wells Stanwick completed his 11th career hat trick during the final run for Hopkins, which also got a second goal on on the day from John Crawley and back-to-back goals from freshman Joel Tinney to close out its scoring. Tinney's first goal came with 7:13 to play and came after he faked a flip to Cattoni and scored on the hidden ball trick that fooled the Michigan defense.

The longer Johns Hopkins runs that came in the final 36 minutes were shorter in the first half and each was answered by Michigan to account for the 5-5 second-quarter tie.

A 3-1 Johns Hopkins spurt in the first nine minutes, which included goals by Phil Castronova, Crawley and Patrick Fraser, was answered by Mikie Schlosser and Mike Hernandez, who scored in a 74-second span late in the first quarter to account for a 3-3 tie at the end of the opening 15 minutes.

Schneider came off the bench after Schlosser's goal and immediately had an impact with two saves in the final three minutes of the first quarter.

When Wells Stanwick and Michael Pellegrino scored in a two-minute span early in the second quarter, the Blue Jays had a 5-3 lead, but McCormack scored off a rebound and Francia added his extra-man goal with just under seven minutes on the clock to draw Michigan even at 5-5.

Shack Stanwick's extra-man goal came just 44 seconds after Francia's and ignited the five-goal run that gave Hopkins a lead it would never relinquish.

Kennedy's 18 faceoff wins are tied for the third-highest single-game total of his career and earned him the Chris Gardner Player of the Game for Johns Hopkins. The award is presented to a member of both teams at the conclusion of a game played each season in honor of Chris Gardner, a Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse player in 1996 who lost a battle to cancer during what would have been his sophomore year at Homewood. Gardner's mom, Kathleen Van Haverbeke, returns each season to present the awards, while an extra dollar added to the cost of all tickets for the game is donated to the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, where Gardener received his treatment before passing away.

Schneider's 13 saves are tied for the third-highest single-game total of his career; he played 45:18 and allowed five goals in the game.

Wells Stanwick led Hopkins with a three-goal, one-assist effort, while Crawley (2g, 1a), Cattoni (2g, 1a) Reed (1g, 2a) and Shack Stanwick (1g, 2a) also had three-point days for the Blue Jays.

David Joseph scored twice and McCormack added one goal and one assist for Michigan, which also got an 11-save performance from Gerald Logan in goal. McCormack was Michigan's Chris Gardner Player of the Game.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, April 25 when the Blue Jays travel to College Park to take on rival Maryland for the 112th time in a series that dates to a 10-0 Johns Hopkins victory in 1895.

Johns Hopkins is assured of no worse than the number three seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and can earn a share of the Big Ten regular season title with a win at Maryland. Seeding in a three-way tie between Johns Hopkins, Maryland and Ohio State will be determined on established criteria by the Big 10.

Notes: Brown's two goals give him 100 in his career -- he is the 18th player in school history to reach the 100-goal mark · He also extended his goal-scoring streak to 28 games, the longest by a Johns Hopkins player since Dylan Schlott had a 28-game run from 1998-99 · Wells Stanwick passed Paul Rabil (178) and Brian Wood (178) on Johns Hopkins' career points list as he now has 181 to rank 11th.
