Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - The 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team closed out its home slate with a 14-6 win over Rutgers on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays got four points each from senior Jen Cook, junior Dene' DiMartino and freshman Emily Kenul as they improve to 12-3. The Scarlet Knights fall to 1-15 as they wrap up their non-conference schedule.

Rutgers cut into Hopkins lead with back-to-back goals to make it a 4-3 game with 11:25 to play in the first half. Hailey Barnes took a pass in the slot from Kim Kolodny and slipped a shot under the crossbar to cut the deficit in half at 16:45. Just over four minutes later, Melissa Arthur fed a pass from behind the goal to Macy Scott, who went over the shoulder of senior KC Emerson and the Blue Jays' lead was down to one.

Hopkins responded with a 4-1 run to the end the half and take an 8-4 lead into the break. Kenul and Cook connected on consecutive goals just 42 seconds apart, both times capitalizing on failed Scarlet Knight clears. Barnes cut into the deficit with her second of the half at the 4:32-mark. But the Blue Jays came right back with goals from DiMartino and freshman Shannon Fitzgerald to take the four-goal lead. DiMartino controlled the ensuing draw off Barnes' goal and drove right to the cage, blowing a shot past Candice Dandridge from seven yards out. Just over a minute later, Fitzgerald bounced a shot home on the run and it was 8-4 Hopkins.

Coming out of the half, Rutgers struck first to cut the deficit to three at the 25:13-mark. Barnes fed a pass from behind to Lauren Sbrilli, who one-timed a shot for her team-leading 33rd goal of the season. But that would be all the scoring for the Scarlet Knights for nearly 24 minutes as the Blue Jays methodically built an eight-goal lead. Cook got on the scoreboard at 23:01 when she weaved through the defense and went low-to-high on Dandridge to spark a five-goal run.

Just 58 seconds later, sophomore Haley Schweizer got her second of the afternoon and the Blue Jays led 10-5. The offense went cold for more than 11 minutes for the Blue Jays until Cook cashed in at 10:49. Kenul found her cutting down the right alley and Cook went top shelf for her second goal of the night. Freshman CeCe Finney followed with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart to cap the run.

Kerri Puckhaber ended the Scarlet Knights' scoring drought, which had stretched for 23:59, at the 1:14-mark. Jenny Vlahos found her in the slot, she turned and scored in traffic. Hopkins came right back, as just 12 seconds later, sophomore Alexis Maffucci fired a shot inside the far post to account for the 14-6 final.

Hopkins jumped out to a two-goal lead with goals from Schweizer and DiMartino just two minutes apart. Schweizer scored from seven yards out off a hard alley dodge at 27:15. Exactly two minutes later, DiMartino went coast-to-coast after a Rutgers' turnover and scored on a high-to-low shot. The Scarlet Knights got on the board thanks to an own goal and it was 2-1 with 22:56 to play in the half. Hopkins answered, quickly pushing its lead to 4-1 by the 19:18-mark. Kenul slipped a shot over the right shoulder of Christina Daniskas for the first of her three on the night. Thee minutes later, DiMartino scooped up the ground ball off a Daniskas save and scored from the doorstep.

DiMartino and Kenul each finished with three goals and four assists, while Cook had two goals and two assists. Schweizer (2g, 1a) and Finney (2g) also had multi-point nights. Junior Josie George led the defense with three ground balls and three caused turnovers while Emerson finished with eight saves. Barnes led the Scarlet Knights with three points (2g, 1a) while Arthur added a pair of assists. Dandridge took the loss, coming off the bench to make five saves in just over 49 minutes of action.

Hopkins returns to the field on Saturday, April 25 as the Blue Jays make the short trip to Towson to take on the Tigers. Opening draw from Johnny Unitas Stadium is set for 1:00 pm.
