Box Score

TOWSON, MD - The 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat host Towson, 11-10, in overtime Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays pick up their second straight win and improve to 13-3 on the season. The Tigers end their regular season with an 8-8 mark as they head in to the CAA Tournament.

The Tigers got back-to-back goals from Andi Raymond and Kaitlyn Montalbano to take a two-goal lead with 12:22 to play in the game. The Blue Jays pulled within one less than two minutes later, when sophomore Alexis Maffucci scored on a highlight reel play with a behind the back goal off an assist from freshman Emily Kenul. Towson quickly answered as Michelle Gildea scored on a hard sidearm shot just 28 seconds later to push the lead back to two.

The Tigers were then the beneficiary of an own goal as Sarah Maloof tried to go over the goal with a pass and the ball got knocked into the Blue Jay cage at the 7:08-mark. The Blue Jays got that one back to make it a 10-8 game with 6:58 to play when Kenul won the draw, went right to the cage and beat Keslea Donnelly with a rocket of a shot from four yards out. Hopkins then cashed in on a Towson turnover as sophomore Haley Schweizer intercepted a pass and sparked the JHU transition. Junior Dene' DiMartino then dodged the left alley, spun back on her defender and buried her shot to pull the Jays within one with 4:02 to go.

Freshman CeCe Finney then tied the game for Hopkins as she dodged from right goal line extended and beat Donnelly on a worm-burner from seven yards out at the 3:11-mark. Towson won the ensuing draw and moved the ball around, holding for the last shot. Raymond drew a free position shot with nine seconds remaining, but her shot went high and time expired before the Tigers could get another shot off.

Schweizer got what turned out to be the only goal of the overtime with 1:18 to play to put Hopkins up 11-10. She dodged the right alley and fired a shot inside the left post for her second of the afternoon. Junior Kristen Cannon then won the ensuing draw and the Blue Jays were able to run off all but 13 seconds. Towson got the ball back and got the ball to Samantha Brookhart just a few yards from goal. With time winding down, senior Octavia Williams checked Brookhart's stick as she shot and the horn sounded.

Hopkins took an early 2-0 lead on goals from senior Jen Cook and sophomore Shannon Fitzgerald. Cook opened the scoring at the 25:11-mark as she scooped up the ground ball off a Donnelly save and slipped it inside the right post. Just 26 seconds later, Fitzgerald dodged across the fan and buried a shot top shelf to double the Hopkins' lead. Towson came right back with a pair of goals from Maloof at 23:53 and 21:16 to knot the score at 2-2, the first of six ties in the game. Fitzgerald answered quickly, winning the draw and going right to the cage before scoring on a bounce shot to put JHU up 3-2. But the Tigers had a quick answer themselves, as Andi Raymond found Emily Gillingham on the doorstep for the quick-stick shot at 20:14.

Gabby Cha then gave Towson its first lead of the game at the 16:45-mark, scoring on a bouncer. But less than a minute later, DiMartino converted a free position shot to tie the game. It was her 35th career free position goal, tying the school record held by Mary Key and Danielle Maschuci. Another quick answer from Towson saw the Tigers take a 5-4 lead on Maloof's third of the afternoon at 15:10. However, Maffucci would tie the game up heading into the half on a low shot off a dodge from goal line extended.

Maloof opened the second-half scoring just 85 seconds in to put Towson back on top. Schweizer answered for the Blue Jays, as she scored off an alley-dodge to make it a 6-6 game with 24:27 to play. Raymon and Montalbano then got back-to-back goals to stake Towson to a two-goal lead, setting the stage for the exciting finish.

DiMartino, Maffucci, Schweizer and Fitzgerald all had two goals for the Blue Jays while Kenul added a goal and an assist. Senior KC Emerson made 10 saves and picked up a pair of ground balls in the win. Williams and sophomore Kirsti Paavola each had three caused turnovers to anchor the defense. Maloof led the Tigers with a game-high four goals while Raymond added three points (1g, 2a), including the 200th of her career. Donnelly made 16 saves in the loss for the Tigers.

Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, May 3 as the Blue Jays travel to Durham, NC to take on the third-ranked Duke Blue Devils. Opening draw from Koskinen Stadium is slated for 11:30 am.
