Bellamy's Breakdown - Previewing the Weekend (04-30-15)

April 30, 2015 Sophomore Will Bellamy joined the Johns Hopkins Athletic Communications staff as a student assistant not long after arriving at Homewood in August 2013. An experienced writer, he will bolster the efforts of the office with a preview of each weekend's events (please note that this is not intended to be an exhaustive in-depth preview of every game or event. Rather, it provides a quick overview for fans with key links and things to look for. Key games, especially those against nationally-ranked teams or those with playoff implications, will lead the column each week).

Men's Lacrosse
The Johns Hopkins men's lacrossnde team will look to continue its already successful inaugural Big Ten season with a win against Penn State in the semi-finals of the conference tournament on Thursday night.

Hopkins secured the top seed after recording a 15-12 victory at rival Maryland last Saturday. The Blue Jays (7-6, 4-1 in Big Ten play) will return to College Park to take on the Nittany Lions (5-8, 2-3).

In a meeting between the two teams earlier this month, the Blue Jays came away with an 11-10 win in double overtime. JHU will likely need strong performances from its stars as it seeks to produce a similar outcome. On Wednesday, attack Ryan Brown received Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors and midfielder Joel Tinney was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Thursday's game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. The victor will face the winner of Maryland and Ohio State on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. with the Big Ten title on the line.

Women's Lacrosse
The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team will seek to end the regular season on a high note when it squares off against Duke in Durham, NC, on Sunday. The Blue Jays (13-3) are ranked 18th in the nation in the most recent edition of the IWLCA poll and a win over the fourth-ranked Blue Devils (14-3) could improve JHU's positioning as the team comes up on the NCAA Division I Tournament.

However, Hopkins will have to find a way to contain Duke's offense if the Blue Jays are to emerge victorious. Duke is averaging 13 goals per game this season and boasts five different scorers with at least 27 goals. Opening draw time is 11:30 a.m. at Koskinen Stadium.

Track
Both the Johns Hopkins men's and women's track teams will head to the Centennial Conference Outdoor Championships in Allentown, PA, this weekend with the hope of building on past success. The men will seek their second straight outdoor title while the women will seek their fifth straight.

Additionally, both teams will look to add to the CC indoor titles they secured in March. However, the Blue Jays will have to top Haverford, Ursinus, and the rest of their rivals in the conference if they are to realize their goals. The Championships will run from Friday to Sunday.

Baseball
The Johns Hopkins baseball team will host the Centennial Conference Tournament this week after having produced the best regular season record in the CC in 2015. However, Hopkins will play its first round game against Haverford (14-18, 9-9) on Thursday at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD due to recent unrest in Baltimore. The rest of the tournament is still scheduled to take place at Babb Field on Saturday and Sunday.

JHU (23-9-1, 13-4-1 in conference play) has benefited this season from a lineup that features the two top hitters in the CC in Craig Hoelzer and Conor Reynolds, as well as from solid pitching. The Blue Jays will likely attempt to use the same formula to advance to the next round of the conference tournament. Game time on Thursday is 3:00 p.m. ET.

Tennis
Both the Johns Hopkins men's and women's tennis teams will host Centennial Conference Championships in Baltimore this weekend. The Championships will take place on Saturday and Sunday and feature the top four men's teams and the top four women's teams in the conference.

Both Blue Jay teams went undefeated against CC opponents in the regular season and each will look to win their ninth straight conference crown this weekend. The men will play Haverford at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in the first semifinal of the day. The winner of that match will face the winner of Franklin & Marshall and Swarthmore at 11:00 am on Sunday for the CC title. Meanwhile, the women will take on Haverford at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The winner will take on the winner of the other semifinal in Franklin & Marshall and Washington College at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday in the title match.
