Box Score Sept. 5, 2015 Final Stats
SPRINGFIELD, OH - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team (1-3) dropped a pair of matches Saturday at the Courtyard Marriot National Invitational. In the first match, host #4 Wittenberg (3-0) defeated Hopkins in straight sets and in the second match it was #17 St. Thomas (MN) (1-2) who upended the Blue Jays in a five-set battle which lasted almost two hours.
Against Wittenberg: The first set was tied at nine apiece before the hosts went on a run scoring 16 of the final 22 points to earn the early lead. In set two, Wittenberg again went on a late run scoring 17 of the final 21 points to win the set 25-12. Hopkins played its best in the third set, which was tied at 22 apiece before three kills from Kara Seidenstricker sealed the match for the Tigers.
Against St. Thomas: The Tommies took the first two sets rather easily (25-13 and 25-20), but JHU did not quit as the squad won the third and fourth sets (25-21 and 25-23) to force a decisive, winner-takes-all fifth set. In the fifth set, St. Thomas raced out to a 10-3 lead and was able to hang on to win 15-7 and take the match.
Inside the Box Score:
• Elizabeth Wuerstle tallied a match-best and career-high 25 kills vs. St. Thomas. The sophomore also added five digs and two service aces.
•Michelle Abt collected her first career double-double in just her fourth match vs. the Tommies. The freshman had 16 digs to go along with 11 kills
•Stephanie Yokoyama totaled a match-best 19 digs in the St. Thomas match. She also collected 13 digs against Wittenberg.
•Kristi Rhead led JHU in assists (10) vs. Wittenberg, while Carolyn Zin added a season-best 32 vs. St. Thomas.
Who's Up Next?: The Blue Jays will look to get back in the win column on Monday in a Labor Day matinee against in-state foe Salisbury. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
