BALTIMORE, MD -- Hampden-Sydney held off the host Johns Hopkins men's basketball team, 75-70, in overtime of the championship game at the 25th annual Blue Jay Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays fall to 4-6 on the season while the Tigers improve to 9-2. Senior Gene Williams and sophomore Kyle Doran earned All-Tournament Team honors for the Blue Jays.
Trailing 63-59, Hopkins got a Sam Gordon layup to cut the deficit in half with 1:24 to play in regulation. Neither team could convert on its next possession and Mike Murray then turned it over with 18 ticks on the clock. With time winding down, Doran drove the baseline and kissed the game-tying bucket off the glass with four ticks on the clock. Murray's three-point shot barely missed the mark at the buzzer and the teams were headed to overtime.
Sophomore Jesse Flannery put Hopkins on top early in the overtime, converting one of two free throws. But 28 seconds later, Guilherme Guimaraes threw down a one-handed alley-oop to swing the lead back in the Tigers' favor. Guimaraes and Andrew Evans then combined for three free throws to push HSC's lead to 68-64 with 2:41 to go. Junior Ryan Curran trimmed the deficit to one with a three from the top of the key, but a JaVonte Reddick runner in the paint pushed it back to three. Curran answered with another bucket from downtown and the teams were knotted at 70 with 61 seconds on the clock.
Evans put the Tigers ahead with a pair of free throws and the Blue Jays could not cash in on the other end. Guimaraes then hit one of two from the stripe and Hopkins turned it over on its next possession. Reddick then sealed the win with two free throws.
Hampden-Sydney jumped out to a six-point lead four minutes in, but Hopkins responded with a 6-0 run to draw even on a Gordon layup at 9:17. Over the ensuing three and a half minutes, the score was tied three more times and there were two lead changes. Leading by one with 5:31 to play in the half, the Tigers got back-to-back three-pointers from Evans and Murray, sandwiched around a Williams layup, to stake HSC to a 25-20 lead. Williams then hit a three and Doran converted a pair of shots from the charity stripe to tie the game at the 1:57-mark. Reddick answered with back-to-back three-pointers to push the Tigers back up by six, but Flannery cut it in half with a three of his own. Hampden-Sydney would take a 31-28 lead into the lockerroom.
Gordon got the first bucket of the second, but Jake Duncan sandwiched a pair of threes around a Billups jumper to make it a seven-point game just 1:44 in. The Blue Jays once again came back as a Doran jumper sparked a 10-2 run that staked Hopkins to a 42-41 lead at the 13:10-mark. The lead changed hands two more times over the next two minutes. Evans put Hampden-Sydney back on top, as it turned out for good, with a triple with 11:06 to go. He followed with another triple and the lead was five 90 seconds later. The Tigers stayed on top until the final seconds when Doran forced overtime.
Williams tied his career-high with a game-high 25 points, going 5-of-9 from three-point and 9-of-14 from the field. Curran also finished in double figures, scoring 13 points, six of those coming in overtime and he also grabbed eight rebounds. Doran just missed a double double, finishing with nine points and a career-best 10 rebounds. Murray finished with a game-high eight assists while turning it over just once for the Tigers. Evans led HSC with 15 points while Reddick had 13 and Guimaraes added 11.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, January 7 as the Blue Jays travel to the Mainline to take on the Haverford Fords. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm at Gooding Arena.
