BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins senior Dene' DiMartino tied her career-high with five goals to lead the women's lacrosse team to a 16-10 win over American Wednesday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays improve to 2-0 on the season while the Eagles slip to 0-2.
Hopkins jumped out to a 6-0 lead with goals from five different players in the game's first 11:08. Sophomore Shannon Fitzgerald put the Blue Jays on the board just 39 seconds into the game, scoring from a tight angle at right goal line extended. The Jays then got back-to-back goals off the dodge from junior Haley Schweizer and DiMartino in a 93-second span to triple their lead at the 24:20-mark. Senior Jenna Reifler pushed Hopkins' lead to four with a free position goal at 20:58.
Sophomore Emily Kenul staked Hopkins to the 6-0 lead with goals just 32 seconds apart. Her first was of the highlight reel variety, going high to intercept a pass in the midfield, then racing to the goal and beating Fiona Geier one-on-one. Kenul then took a pass in the slot from freshman Miranda Ibello and one-timed a shot past Geier with 18:52 to play in the half. The Eagles finally got on the board at the 12:44-mark with a goal in transition from Madison Hoon. Just over a minute later, Jessica Wojciechowski scored on free position to make it 6-2.
The Blue Jays answered with three goals in less than three minutes to push out to a 9-2 lead. Senior Caroline Turco took a pass from Reifler and scored from close range as she slid to the ground at 8:29. DiMartino got her second of the day as she slipped a shot over Geier's left shoulder and into the corner. Fitzgerald completed the spurt at 5:41 when she took a pass from junior Alexis Maffucci and scored from the doorstep.
The teams traded goals in the final 3:02 of the half and Hopkins took an 11-4 lead into the break. Jennifer DeSimone made it a 9-3 game with a free position goal, but just nine seconds later, DiMartino went right to the goal off the draw and buried her third of the day. Olivia Mangan got one back for the Eagles with 1:23 to play, scoring on a sidearm shot from six yards out. But the Blue Jays had the final say, as Reifler scored in transition with just 1.9 seconds on the clock.
DeSimone got her second free position goal of the day to open the second-half scoring at 23:52. Hopkins once again answered with three straight goals, pushing out to a 14-5 lead with 17:46 still to play. DiMartino started the run when she blew a shot past Geier from seven yards out. Kenul then completed her hat trick, scoring off a Reifler feed less than a minute later. Sophomore CeCe Finney capped the run, scooping up a loose ball and scoring on a sidearm shot from the left alley.
American wasn't going away, outscoring Hopkins, 5-1, in a five-minute span. The run trimmed the Blue Jays' lead to five with 6:05 on the clock. JHU's defense clamped down from there as American got just one shot in the final six minutes. Sophomore Chloe Duke closed out the scoring, going high-to-low, for her first of the season at 1:43.
DiMartino's hat trick was the 27th of her career and moved her into sixth place in Hopkins' Division I history. She also grabbed a game-high six draws, while Kenul and Schweizer had four apiece. Kenul (3g, 1a) and Reifler (2g, 2a) finished with four points each. Junior Caroline Federico made six saves, while her counterpart made nine. DeSimone led American with four goals, while Mangan and Wojciechowski totaled three points (2g, 1a) apiece.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday as the Blue Jays travel to New Jersey to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Opening draw at High Point Solutions Stadium is slated for 1:00 pm.
