2016 Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team won four of its five matches on Sunday at the Philadelphia Invitational. Included in the Blue Jays' wins was one over the ninth-ranked Duke Blue Devils.

How it Happened
• Hopkins opened the day with a 21-6 loss to host and third-ranked Penn. The Quakers edged the Blue Jays, 5-4, in the Foil with sophomore Ian Maddox winning two of his three bouts. Penn won the Epee (7-2) and the Sabre (9-0) and sophomore Matthias Philippine picked up JHU's two wins in the Epee.
• JHU followed with a 22-5 win over Drew, sweeping all three weapons. Hopkins blanked the Rangers in the Foil with Maddox, sophomore Jared LeBron and freshman Solomon Polansky each went 3-0. The Blue Jays pulled out a 5-4 win in the Epee, with sophomore Denis Routkevitch clinching the win in the final bout. They then won the Sabre, 8-1, on the strength of three wins from sophomore Sandy Vingoe.
• Hopkins then beat Duke, 14-13, with wins in the Foil (5-4) and Sabre (5-4). LeBron clinched the win in the Foil while seniors Jay Petrie and Glenn Balbus each won two bouts. The Blue Devils picked up a 5-4 win in the Epee, with Philippine winning two of his bouts for the Blue Jays. In the Sabre, Vingoe and junior Daniel Dembner combining for four wins.
• Hopkins then beat Haverford, 19-8, with a sweep of all three weapons. The Blue Jays won the Foil, 8-1, behind three wins from Balbus. JHU picked up a 5-4 win in the Epee with Philippine and freshman William Snyder winning two bouts each and Philippine clinching the win. Freshman Brian Huang led the Sabre squad to a 6-3 win by winning all three of his bouts.
• JHU wrapped up the day with a close 14-13 win over Sacred Heart. The Blue Jays won the Foil, 5-4, with Petrie earning three wins. The Pioneers then won the Epee by a 6-3 score with Philippine picking up two wins for the Blue Jays. Vingoe won all three of his bouts to lead the Sabre squad to a 6-3 win.

What it Means
• Johns Hopkins is now 19-10 on the season with its second win over a top-10 team since 2012-13.
