Johns Hopkins Picks Up Seven Wins over the Weekend

Junior Patrick Rose earned 15 wins over the weekend.


BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team won seven of its 10 bouts over the weekend, including wins over North Carolina, Lafayette, Cornell and Rutgers. The Blue Jays are now 15-9 on the season, matching their win total from a year ago. Junior Patrick Rose led the Blue Jays and the Sabre squad with 15 wins over the weekend.

How it Happened at Duke
• Hopkins opened the weekend with a close 14-13 win over North Carolina, with a win in the Foil (7-2). Senior Glenn Balbus and sophomore Ian Maddox combined for six wins to lead the Blue Jays in the Foil. Hopkins lost a close one in the Epee, behind a pair of wins from sophomore Matthias Philippine. Rose and sophomores Sandy Vingoe and David Austin each earned a win in the Sabre.
• Hopkins then faced second-ranked Notre Dame, falling 22-5. Senior Jay Petrie won two of his three bouts in a 7-2 loss in the Foil. Philippine and sophomore Max White each won a bout in the Epee (2-7) and in the Sabre, freshman Brian Huang picked the lone Blue Jays' win.
• In the next round, Hopkins lost 25-2 to fourth-ranked Penn State. Sophomore Denis Routkevitch picked up JHU's two wins, going 2-1 in the Epee.
• Hopkins got back in the win column with an 18-9 victory over Brandeis. The win snapped a six-bout losing streak to the Judges. The Blue Jays won the Foil by an 8-1 score, led by Balbus and Petrie with three wins each. Routkevitch, Philippine and White each won two bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 6-3 win. The Sabre squad dropped a tough 5-4 decision, with Rose grabbing a pair of wins.
• The Blue Jays closed out the day with a 16-11 loss to the host and ninth-ranked Blue Devils. Balbus, Maddox and sophomore Jared LeBron each won a bout in a 6-3 loss in the Foil. The Blue Jays edged the Devils, 5-4, in the Epee behind two wins each from Philippine and sophomore Milan Patel. Duke then took the Sabre, 6-3, with Vingoe getting two wins for Hopkins.

How it Happened at Johns Hopkins
• Hopkins kicked the day off with an 18-9 win over Lafayette with wins in the Sabre (6-3) and Foil (8-1). LeBron and sophomore Michael Pozin led the Foil squad with two wins, while Rose and Brian Huang led the Sabre squad with two wins each.
• The Blue Jays then beat the Fords of Haverford 22-5 with a sweep of all three weapons. LeBron and Petrie each swept their round to lead Hopkins to an 8-1 win in the Foil. Vingoe and White each did the same in the Sabre (7-2) and Epee (7-2), respectively.
• Hopkins followed with a 23-4 victory over Drew, once again sweeping all three weapons. Sophomore Jun Choi and freshman Solomon Polansky won two bouts each to pace the Foil squad to an 8-1 win. In the Sabre, Rose and Austin went a combined 6-0 as the Blue Jays won 8-1. Patel and freshman William Snyder each won two bouts in a 7-2 win for JHU in the Epee.
• JHU topped Cornell in its closest match of the day, beating the Big Red, 16-11. Maddox led the Foil squad with a pair of wins and clinched the win for the Jays. The Sabre squad won 6-3 behind three wins from Vingoe. And in the Epee, six different Blue Jays fenced in a 5-4 win. Senior Andy Huang led the way with two wins while Sophomore Lyle Poisson clinched the win in the final bout.
• Hopkins wrapped up the day and the weekend with a 23-4 win over Rutgers. Polansky and Pozin each swept their round to lead Hopkins to an 8-1 win in the Foil. Rose won all three of his bouts as the Blue Jays won the Sabre, 6-3. And in the Epee, Andy Huang and Patel combined for four wins in a 9-0 win.

What it Means
• Hopkins' 15 wins match its season total from a year ago and give head coach Austin Young 232 in his 13 seasons with the Blue Jays.
• Senior Jay Petrie now has 269 career wins, ranking him ninth in school history, among all weapons and fourth among Foilists.
• Senior Glenn Balbus reached 225 career wins to move into 19th in school history among all weapons and ninth among Foilists.
• Senior Andy Huang notched his 100th career win on Sunday in the win over Rutgers.
