CATONSVILLE, MD - The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team outscored host UMBC 12-1 in the second half and cruise to a 19-7 victory before a crowd of 1,362 Wednesday evening at UMBC Stadium. The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 5-3, while the Retrievers slip to 1-6.
The Blue Jays led just 7-6 at the half before pushing out to a 10-6 lead with a three-goal run in the first 6:25 of the second half. Senior attackman Ryan Brown had a hand in all three goals as he opened the second-half scoring at the 12:27 mark and then assisted on consecutive goals by Shack Stanwick and John Crawley in a three-minute span before the period was seven minutes old.
UMBC halted the run with a Jack Andrews goal on a nice cut in the slot with 4:30 remaining in the quarter, but Kyle Marr jump-started a nine-goal game-ending run for the Blue Jays that sealed their 14th consecutive win in the series.
Marr scored all three of his goals, Brown scored twice and six different players scored during the game-ending spree for Johns Hopkins. Included among the eight goals the Blue Jays scored in the final quarter were the first goals of the season for junior defenseman Nick Fields, sophomore short stick defensive midfielder Tal Bruno and senior attackman Liam Giblin.
The decisive second half saw Hopkins score on 12-of-28 shots, control 24 of the 33 groundballs and win 11-of-15 faceoffs.
The first 30 minutes saw the Blue Jays control the stat sheet, but lead just 7-6 as UMBC got seven first-half saves from Ruston Souder to stay close. Johns Hopkins held a three-goal lead at 6-3 after back-to-back goals by Wilkins Dismuke and Brown in a 65-second span early in the second quarter, but UMBC answered with tallies by Nate Lewnes and Max Maxwell to make it 6-5 midway through the period.
Dismuke finished his first-half hat trick to push the lead to 7-5 with 6:51 remaining before intermission, but Billy O'Hara scored off the ensuing faceoff to close out the scoring in the opening 30 minutes and account for the 7-6 Hopkins lead at intermission.
The one-goal halftime lead held for less than three minutes in the third quarter before Brown got his hands free at the top of the box and ignited the second-half run for Johns Hopkins.
In all, 10 different players scored for Johns Hopkins with Brown leading the way with four goals and two assists. The hat trick is the 22nd of his career, which ties him with Mike O'Neill (1975-78) for fifth place in school history in that category. He moved past O'Neill into fourth place on JHU's career goal-scoring list (139) and also moved ahead of Paul Rabil (2005-08) and Brian Wood (1984-87) into 12th place on Johns Hopkins' career point-scoring list with his six-point effort (182).
Stanwick matched Brown's six-point effort with one goal and a career-high-tying five assists, while Marr (3g, 1a) and Dismuke (3g) added hat tricks of their own.
Johns Hopkins ended the game with a 21-of-29 performance on faceoffs that was paced by senior Craig Madarasz (12-of-18) and sophomore Hunter Moreland (7-of-9). Madarasz added one goal and six ground balls, while Fields had a career-high eight ground balls to go along with his fourth-quarter goal.
Lewnes was the only multi-goal scorer for UMBC as he finished with three goals. Maxwell chipped in with one goal and two assists and Andrews added one goal and one assist. Souder finished with 16 saves in goal for the Retrievers.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, April 2 when the Blue Jays travel to Rutgers. Faceoff against the Scarlet Knights is set for 7 pm.
