Box Score

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers starting attack unit of Scott Bieda, Jules Heningburg and Adam Charalambides combined for nine goals and eight assists to power the Scarlet Knights to a 16-9 victory over 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins in the Big Ten men's lacrosse opener for both teams Saturday night. Rutgers improves to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten, while the Blue Jays slip to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten.

Rutgers used two key scoring runs, one in each half, to take control and pull away from the Blue Jays. The second, a five-goal spurt that bridged the third and fourth quarters, turned a 9-6 lead into a 14-6 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Jays scored three of the first four goals of the second half to slice an 8-3 deficit to 9-6. A pair of goals by John Crawley and a goal from the crease by Wilkins Dismuke in a four-minute span early in the third quarter made it a three-goal game, but that would be as close as the Blue Jays would get.

Josh Jordan's second goal of the game with exactly six minutes remaining in the third quarter jump-started the five-goal run for the 'Knights, who got goals from Charalambides and Bieda before the end of the period to make it 12-6 entering the final period and Charalambides and Heningburg struck in the first two minutes of the fourth to put the game away.

Rutgers sprinted to an 8-3 halftime lead by outscoring the Blue Jays 4-0 over the final 8:08 of the second quarter. Johns Hopkins was down 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2, but had the deficit down to one at 4-3 when senior Ryan Brown completed the 23rd hat trick of his career with 8:50 left on the second-quarter clock.

From there, the Scarlet Knights took over as Jordan answered Brown's tally just 42 seconds later and Heningburg, Christian Scarpello and Charalambides added tallies of their own before halftime to give the 'Knights the five-goal halftime lead.

That lead was down to three twice in the opening minutes of the third quarter on the strength of the two Crawley goals and the marker from Dismuke, but Jordan, who had ignited the four-goal run in the first-half, answered Dismuke's tally and Rutgers never looked back.

Bieda (3g, 3a) and Heningburg (2g, 4a) led Rutgers with six points each and Charalambides (4g, 1a) added five. The Scarlet Knights also got 14 saves in goal from senior Kris Alleyne.

Hopkins was led by Brown (4g), Stanwick (2g, 2a) and Crawley (2g, 1a). Hunter Moreland won 9-of-12 faceoffs and sophomore Brock Turnbaugh has 11 saves in goal for the Blue Jays.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, April 9 when the Blue Jays welcome Ohio State to Homewood Field. Faceoff on Homecoming against the Buckeyes is set for 2 pm
