• The Short Story: The 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team fought off an upset-minded Marquette team to win 12-10 on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee. Senior Haley Schweizer and junior Shannon Fitzgerald scored a hat trick each to lead the Blue Jays.
How it Happened
• Schweizer opened the scoring less than two minutes in with a free position goal to stake Hopkins to the early 1-0 lead. Junior CeCe Finney doubled the Jays' lead at the 23:28 mark when she took a pass from classmate Emily Kenul in stride and beat Molly Grozier over the shoulder.
• Cate Soccodato got Marquette on the board with the possession clock winding down as she scored on a high lefty shot at 21:44. Freshman Lexi Souder answered for the Blue Jays just 94 seconds later with a hard, high shot off the dodge that gave JHU a 3-1 lead.
• Grace Gabriel and Riley Hill then scored back-to-back goals just 21 seconds apart to tie the game at three with 16:45 to play.
• Fitzgerald and Schweizer came right back with a pair of free position goals and Hopkins lead was 5-3 at the 9:11-mark. Gabriel then got her second of the day, scoring in traffic from the middle of the fan at 6:51, to cut the lead to one.
• Schweizer and Fitzgerald once again scored consecutive goals to push the Blue Jays lead to three. Schweizer scooped up a loose ball and dodged hard to the cage to score her third of the day, this one on man-up at 5:01. Sixty-one seconds later, the Blue Jays were clearing and Schweizer found Fitzgerald at the 30 on a restart. Fitzgerald went straight to the cage, shooting high-to-low for her second of the day.
• Marquette had the final say of the half as Julianna Shearer scored twice in a span of just 99 seconds. Her first came on a quick-start off a high Soccodato pass at 3:25. She then scored on a bouncer to make it 7-6 Hopkins at the half.
• The Golden Eagles struck first in the second, tying the game at 23:55. Gabriel scored her third of the day on a hard sidearm shot from the left alley to even the score at seven. The Blue Jays retook the lead at the 22:22-mark as they capitalized in transition. Kenul carried into the offensive end, drew a slide and then found freshman Maggie Schneidereith open on the right post for the score.
• Kenul then converted a free position shot to give Hopkins a 9-7 lead with 14:29 to play. Marquette kept fighting and tied the game with goals from Soccodatto and Allison Lane in a 78-second span.
• Finney followed with her second of the day just 44 seconds later off a nifty feed from Schneidereith to once again put the Blue Jays ahead with 11:43 to play. Fitzgerald pushed the lead two with her second free position goal at 5:45.
• Hopkins then got a big save from senior Carolina Federico on Lane with 3:10 to play. The offense rewarded her when Souder scored her second of the day at the 2:28-mark to stake the Blue Jays to a three-goal lead.
• The Golden Eagles won the ensuing draw and Shearer scored just 26 seconds later to cut the lead to two. Schweizer snagged the next draw and the Jays were able to run off all by the final few seconds.
