• The Short Story: Senior co-captain Josh Kurtz poured in five goals and two assists to lead the Johns Hopkins water polo team to a 13-7 win over Cal Lutheran Sunday morning.
How it Happened
• Cal Lutheran got on the board first when Davy Thomas converted a five-meter shot at the 4:34-mark. Hopkins answered quickly with a goal from senior Jono Gillette to tie the game. Kurtz then put the Blue Jays on top with his first of the day 52 seconds later.
• The Kingsmen came back with a pair of goals to retake the lead with 25 ticks on the clock. Hopkins wasn't done yet as the squad got goals from sophomore Finn Banks and Kurtz in the final eight seconds of the quarter to take a 4-3 lead.
• The Kingsmen once again struck first in the quarter with a George Lundgren goal at 6:37. The Blue Jays responded with an 8-1 run that spanned nearly 16 minutes and saw them take a 12-5 lead. Six different Jays scored during the run, led by Kurtz's three goals.
• Trailing by seven with four and a half minutes to play, Cal Lutheran sandwiched a pair of goals around a five-meter goal from freshman John Murphy but it wasn't enough.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 5-1 all-time against Cal Lutheran and was won the last two meetings.
• The Blue Jays improve to 3-0 on the season and have won the first three games for the second time in the last three years.
Inside the Box Score
• Kurtz led the team and the game with a career-best five goals and seven points. Junior co-captain Giorgio Cico handed out a game-high four assists and also grabbed two steals.
• Banks also totaled four points (2g, 2a) while Murphy had a season-best three points (2g, 1a).
• Senior co-captain John Wilson finished with nine saves, one assist and one steal in the win.
For the Record
• Cico's four assists give him 89 for his career and now ranks 10th in school history.
• Wilson has 26 saves on the season and now ranks third in school history with 555 career saves.
