• The Short Story: Sophomore Mackenzie Heldberg had a career day with five goals and six points to lead the 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to a 10-8 win at Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened
• Michigan jumped out to a three-goal lead in the game's opening 8:02, fueled by a pair of goals from Adriana Pendino. She struck just 61 seconds in with a high-to-low shot from the left alley. Three minutes later, she had her second of the afternoon. She took a pass from Chandler Kirby and this time went low-to-high from seven yards out. Five minutes later Kirby converted a free position shot and the Wolverines led 3-0.
• Heldberg ended the Michigan run and scored the first of her four first-half goals to spark a seven-goal Hopkins' run that saw the Blue Jays go into the half with a 7-3 lead.
• Heldberg got the run going with a free position goal at 20:36 and less than a minute later, she took a pass from junior Nicole DeMase and scored on a low shot in traffic to pull JHU within one. Senior CeCe Finney tied the game at the 16:58-mark when she took a pass from Heldberg and scored from in-tight with just two seconds left on the possession clock.
• Exactly 60 seconds later, DeMase blew a shot past Alli Kothari from seven yards out to put Hopkins on top 4-3. Heldberg followed with back-to-back goals in a four-minute span to push the lead to three with 7:42 to play in the half. Freshman Shelby Harrison capped the first-half run with a free position goal at the 1:40-mark.
• Michigan opened the second with a pair of quick goals to pull back within two by the 25:44-mark. Maggie Kane scored on a free position shot at 26:01 to make it 7-4. Just 17 seconds later, Caitlin Muir dodged from the right and scored on a sidearm shot.
• Hopkins answered with three straight to push out to a 10-5 lead with 15:18 to play. Schneidereith got things going when she took a behind-the-back pass from senior Shannon Fitzgerald and beat Kothari from close range at 23:20. Just 54 seconds later, Schneidereith fed a cutting Heldberg and she slipped a shot inside the far post. Fitzgerald capped the run when she intercepted a Wolverine pass at the restraining line and went in all alone for the score.
• Michigan wasn't going away however and the home team scored the final three goals to pull back within two with 46.5 seconds remaining. Lilly Grass scored off the dodge with 7:18 to play to end an 18-minute scoring drought. Bianca Brueckner followed with a free position goal at 3:08 and then grabbed the rebound off a Haley Crosson kick-save and scored to make it 10-8. Freshman Keegan Barger won the ensuing draw and the Blue Jays were able to run out the clock.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 3-0 all-time against Michigan with its first win in Ann Arbor. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Blue Jays and is their first Big Ten win of the season.
