Blue Jays, Bullets to Battle Under the Friday Night Lights

The Game
«  Johns Hopkins (4-2, 3-2 Centennial) plays the second of two straight games at home as the Blue Jays welcome Gettysburg (1-5, 1-4 Centennial) to Homewood Field.

A Look Back
«  Johns Hopkins had a three-game winning streak snapped as the Blue Jays dropped a 20-17 decision to Franklin & Marshall at home last Saturday.]
«  Gettysburg snapped a five-game season-opening losing streak and a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season with a 31-28 win at Juniata last weekend.

The Facts
«  This is the 135th season of Johns Hopkins football.  JHU first fielded a team in 1882.
«  Johns Hopkins enters this week's game with an all-time record of 559-486-58 (.533).
«  In this decade (since the start of the 2010 season), the Blue Jays are 96-16 (.857) overall and 79-7 (.919) in the Centennial Conference.
«  JHU owns 14 Centennial Conference titles (all won since 2002) and has qualified for the NCAA Playoffs 10 times (all since 2005).

Oktoberfest
«  Johns Hopkins flipped the calendar to October with its game at Ursinus (Oct. 5) - and the month has been good to the Blue Jays of late as JHU is 30-1 in its last 31 games in October.
«  The loss to Franklin & Marshall last week snapped a 30-game winning streak in the month of October for the Blue Jays.  Prior to the loss to the Diplomats, Johns Hopkins had last lost a game in the month of October in 2010, when the Blue Jays fell at Ursinus, 26-17 (10-16-2010).
«  Ironically, the Blue Jays had been just 10-8 in their previous 18 games in the month of October before jump-starting the 30-game run with a 49-24 win at Susquehanna (10-23-2010).

After the Bye
«  Dating back to 2011, when the Centennial Conference went to a league-wide bye in the middle of the season, Johns Hopkins is 37-2 in regular season games played after the bye week (including last week's loss to F&M).
«  Since 2011, Johns Hopkins is 19-1 in regular season games played at Homewood Field after the bye week - last week's loss to F&M was JHU's first at home after the bye since the league-wide bye began in 2011.

On This Date
«  This week's game will be the 13th the Blue Jays have played on this date - and the first since Hopkins dropped a 14-6 decision at Muhlenberg in 2003.
«  The Blue Jays are 4-7-1 all-time in games played on October 25 and have currently dropped five straight games played on this date.

Friday Night Lights
«  Johns Hopkins continues a tradition that started on September 25, 1982 with the Friday night game at Homewood Field this week against Gettysburg. 
«  This week's game against the Bullets will be the 51st Friday night game Johns Hopkins will host since that first one against Widener in 1982.
«  The Blue Jays are 36-13-1 at home on Friday nights and have won 11 straight games at Homewood under the Friday night lights.  Included is a 41-0 victory against Moravian earlier this season.
«  Gettysburg has been Johns Hopkins' most common Friday night opponent as this week's trip will be the Bullets' 15th to Homewood Field.  The Blue Jays have won 11 of the previous 14 Friday night matchups against Gettysburg.

A Defensive Group
«  Through six games, the Johns Hopkins defense is allowing just 17.3 points and 356.0 yards per game.
«  Johns Hopkins ranks second in the Centennial in scoring defense, seventh in total defense and first in passing defense (178.3).
«  The opposition has completed just 50.0% of its passes against the Blue Jays (88-of-176) with six touchdown passes against nine interceptions.
«  The Blue Jays have allowed just six touchdowns and 46 total points in the first three quarters of their six games thus far.

Getting On Track
«  Johns Hopkins scored a season-high 41 points in the 41-0 victory over Moravian (9-20) and followed that with a 37-point effort at Dickinson and a 32-point showing at Ursinus.  After scoring 17 points at Randolph-Macon, the Blue Jays scored at least 27 points in four straight games before F&M held the JHU to 17 in a 20-17 Diplomat victory.
«  In addition to the scoring being up, the yards have started to pile up for the Blue Jays as well.  After punching up 277 yards of total offense in the season-opener at Randolph-Macon, JHU has 409 (Susquehanna), 484 (Moravian), 482 (Dickinson), 350 (Ursinus) and 415 (F&M) yards in its last five games.
«  Through six games, Johns Hopkins ranks fourth in the Centennial in scoring offense (28.5), third in total offense (402.8) and first in passing offense (292.7).

Tammaro Nearing More Milestones
«  Senior QB David Tammaro enters this week's game against Gettysburg on the cusp of several more milestones.  In his career, he is currently 680-1,060 for 8,856 yards with 72 touchdowns against 14 interceptions.  He has also rushed for 841 yards and 16 scores for 9,697 yards of total offense.
«  Tammaro needs two touchdown passes to tie Hewitt Tomlin's JHU record of 74 and he'll become the second JHU QB and third in Centennial Conference history to top 9,000 passing yards with 144 more.  He'll also become the second JHU player and fourth Centennial player to reach 10,000 yards of total offense with 303 more.  With 159 rushing yards and 144 passing yards, he'll become the second player in CC history with 10,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards.  For his ranks in all Johns Hopkins categories, please see the charts on page 4.
«  Tammaro also holds the Johns Hopkins career touchdowns responsible for record with 88 (72 passing / 16 rushing) - that mark is tied for fourth in Centennial history and he could become just the second CC player to reach 100.
«  On the year, Tammaro is 135-of-225 for 1,730 yards with 12 touchdowns against three interceptions and leads the team in rushing with 188 yards and three scores.

Hubley Reaches 150
«  Junior wide receiver Ryan Hubley continues to lead the Blue Jays in receiving as he has a team-high 41 catches for 497 yards and two touchdowns through six games.  He leads the Centennial Conference in receptions and ranks third in receiving yards.
«  With four receptions against Franklin & Marshall, he became the 10th player in school history to reach 150 career receptions (153).  He also ranks 15th in career receiving yards (1,729)
«  Hubley enjoyed a productive outing against Moravian when he had 10 receptions for 112 yards and one touchdown.  This came one week after one of the finest games of his career against Susquehanna as he totaled 12 receptions for 161 yards and also returned two kickoffs for 41 yards against the River Hawks.
«  The 12 receptions and 161 receiving yards against Susquehanna both matched Hubley's previous career highs and the 202 all-purpose yards are a personal best.
«  With 10 receptions against Moravian, he became the first Johns Hopkins player with 10 or more receptions in back-to-back games since current Blue Jay special teams coordinator/defensive line coach Dan Wodicka had 13 against McDaniel and 12 against St. John Fisher in 2011 (Wodicka also did it earlier in the 2011 season against Dickinson (11) and Gettysburg (15)).

Wellmann Enjoying Breakout Season
«  Sophomore wide receiver Harrison Wellmann is enjoying the breakout season the Blue Jays needed as he leads the team in receiving yards (549) and  TD receptions (7) and ranks second in receptions (33).  He is also averaging 31.1 yards per kickoff return (11-342-1) and 149.8 all-purpose yards per game.
«  Wellmann enjoyed the finest game of his career in the win at Dickinson with 298 all-purpose yards, a kickoff return for a touchdown and a career-high 142 receiving yards.
«  Wellmann's 95-yard kickoff return for a TD against the Red Devils is tied for the longest in school history and he returned three kickoffs on the day for 156 yards (52.0 yards/game).  He added eight receptions for 142 yards to ring up his 298-yard all-purpose performance.  For his efforts he was named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and his 298 all-purpose yards against Dickinson rank as the eighth-best total in school history.
«  Wellmann totaled at least 100 receiving yards in three straight games (7-108-2 vs. Moravian, 8-142-0 at Dickinson, 4-106-2 at Ursinus) to become the first JHU receiver with three straight 100-yard games since Sam Wernick did it in 2010.  He then had four receptions for 76 yards and one score against F&M.

Kalanik Reaches 25 Sacks, 50 TFLs
«  Senior defensive end Mike Kalanik posted a career-high 12 tackles, including 2.5 for losses and half a sack, in the 32-29 win at Ursinus, and came back with four tackles, including 1.5 for losses, against F&M.  He now has 39 tackles on the season, including team highs of 11.0 TFLs and 4.0 sacks.  He ranks second in the Centennial Conference with his 11 TFLs.
«  With his recent efforts, Kalanik now has 173 tackles, 26.0 sacks and 55.0 tackles for losses in his career.  He is the seventh Centennial Conference player since 2000 to reach 25 career sacks and the sixth CC player since 2000 to reach 50 career TFLs.  He ranks third among Centennial Conference players in career TFLs since the 2000 season.

Offensive Player Notes of Interest
«  Freshman Lance Large had two receptions for 30 yards at Ursinus and now has eight receptions for 96 yards on the year.
«  Freshman RB Jonas Larson rushed for a career-high 47 yards on nine carries at Ursinus, added 44 yards on 10 carries against F&M and ranks third on the team with 157 rushing yards in six games.  His 4.8 yards per carry is the best on the team among players with more than five attempts.
«  Senior Dane Rogerson leads the team in rushing (45-171-1) and ranks third in receiving (13-80-0) despite missing the Blue Jays' last two games.  Rogerson has accounted for 1,596 career all-purpose yards.
«  Sophomore TE Emmett Turner ranks third on the team in receiving with 16 receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown in six games.  He had four receptions for 69 yards and one TD against F&M; the 69 receiving yards are a career high.
«  RB Luke Yakely tied his career high with two rushing touchdowns at Ursinus and now has 109 rushing yards and three TDs on the year.

Defensive Player Notes of Interest
«  Sophomore Ross Andersson had a career-high 11 tackles at Ursinus, added seven against F&M and now has 31 tackles and a team-high three INTs on the year.
«  Sophomore Robert Fletcher had eight tackles and one pass breakup at Ursinus, added six tackles against F&M and now has 32 tackles, two pass breakups and one INT on the year.  He picked up the 125th tackle of his career at Ursinus.
«  Senior Nick Hartman recorded the 50th tackle of his career at Ursinus, posted six tackles and forced a fumble against F&M and ranks third on the team with 41 tackles this season. 
«  Junior Macauley Kilbane had five tackles, four pass breakups and blocked an extra point (that was returned for two points) in the win at Ursinus, added four tackles and blocked another extra-point against F&M and now has 24 tackles, a team-high nine PBUs and one INT on the year.  He needs 14 tackles to reach 100 in his career.  In addition, his 21 career pass breakups are third-best among Johns Hopkins players since 2000.
«  Junior Kyle Roberts had a career-high nine tackles and added a personal-best two sacks at Ursinus.  He now has 28 tackles, 4.0 TFLs and 3.0 sacks this season and 82 tackles, 14.5 TFLs and 7.0 sacks in his career.
«  Sophomore Nick Seidel totaled seven tackles and an interception at Ursinus and four tackles against F&M.  He ranks second on the team in tackles (42) through six games and also has two interceptions this season.
«  Senior Corey Tull is seeing the most extensive playing time of his career and has 24 tackles this season after posting four at Ursinus and two against F&M.
«  Junior Ryan Weed notched seven tackles at Ursinus and 10 against F&M to take over the team-lead with 43 tackles on the year.  He also has two interceptions and five pass breakups on the year and notched the 75th tackle of his career against F&M.
«  Junior Finn Zechman counts 19 tackles and three PBUs to his credit this season.  He recorded the 50th tackle of his career in the win at Dickinson.

Close Calls
«  Since the start of the 2013 season, Johns Hopkins has lost a total of 10 games.  Those 10 losses have come by five, three, five, seven, four, three, two, eight, one and three points.  Translation, Johns Hopkins' 10 losses since the start of the 2013 season have all come by a touchdown or less and by a total of just 40 points.

On a Roll
«  Johns Hopkins is 85-5 in its last 90 regular season games dating back to late in the 2010 season.
«  The Blue Jays are 92-13 in their last 105 games overall since late in the 2010 season.
